Different pen personalities

Karin

Recommended Posts

I`ve been wondering about a comment that Wim made awhile ago. Something to the effect that his pens tell him what colour ink they want. I actually believe this

And this ties in with Grasshopper`s idea of dating a pen. Really dating a pen-candy and flowers and getting to know you.

I`ve been using my Tamenuri cigar shaped and it has told me emphatically that it likes Pelikan Black.

Also, when I fondle- oops I mean write with it and then put it down to pick up my Kara-Nuri, this pen feels totally different. Even the temperature of the urushi seems cooler. And it has a different personality and ink preference.

I`m going to spend time getting to know many of my pens in this intimate, sensuous way.

Whaddya think?

You've left waaaay to many leads for smutty comments.

I also find that my pens have gender. As to getting to know your pens, that's one of the reasons that I've taken my rotation down to only one pen. It allows me to really focus on that one pen, get to know it very well. (I do cheat and have a few Lamy Safari's inked up with fun colors)

Is it possible that some inks have neurologically toxic chemicals in them? Just kidding :D :P

I would agree. Some of my pens have personalities to me, distinct preferences in ink colors, and I suspect they affect my writing. Prose that comes from a No Nonsense pen with black ink and a regular nib is not the same as Private Reserve Plum from a Waterman Hemisphere.

Hmmm. Well, I have one little Pelikan m100, white with black trim and a black nib, that makes me instantly think of Rene Zellweger (sp?) and her white turbaned self at the end of the movie Down With Love . It's my ultra cool, movie star pen. :)

My pens and I are in total agreement. We want blue Quink, Waterman Florida Blue or Duke Black ('cos that's what there is). Soon, however, our tastes may change to Webster's Diamine Blue/Black of considerable antiquity because there's about a pint of that in the post.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
