Walking the streets of London

grasshopper

Recommended Posts

I’ll be heading to London for a week or so in the second week of July for a cousin’s wedding. I suspect I might have a day or 2 of free time so I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on shops or places worthwhile for a fellow pen freak to visit? Preferably around the London area, unless anyone has a strong recommendation for me to venture outwards - traveling time might be a factor, but could still be worth considering.

Many thanks in advance.

Would anyone like anything from there?

Hi grasshopper,

You should go and see the Portobello Road market and visit the small shops in the arcade; there are a couple pen dealers with some nice, not the run-of-the-mill vintage pens.

Also visit the Pen Friend store in the Bush House on the Strand. They have modern and vintage pens.

Some UK web sites for pens:

Writetime: www.writetime.co.uk

Hans's Pens: www.hanspens.com

Andy's Pens: www.andys-pens.ukhome.net

David Wells: www.old-pens.co.uk

The Writing Desk: www.writingdesk.fsnet.co.uk

Penbox: www.penbox.co.uk

Just check Jim Mamoulides' site as well, for more links (www.penhero.com).

Most general 'High Street' pen dealers in the UK have a stock line in new pens, be it not very adventurous, and prices are quite high (retail, sometimes retail plus).

HTH, warm regards, Wim

Hi James,

Thanks, of course this happens the one time I didn't check :D. I got these sites from someone else a while back, loosk liek the first one had gone bust or so, and linked through to something else. I removed it already.

I better check the other ones too :D.

Thanks again!

Warm regards, Wim

P.S.: The other ones, the ones left now, are ok.

edit: added P.S.

I live in London (about 15min from central) and didn't know half these shops, thanks wimg! You really do know it all

Couldn't have put it better myself. Very true.

I believe there are also 5 Independent Montblanc Boutiques at 13 Old Bond Street, 60/61 Burlington Arcade, 10/11 Royal Exchange, 6 Canada Place (Canary Wharf) and 151 Sloane Street.

Of course there are Harrods and Selfridge's famous pen departments.

I don't recommend high street shops, unless you can find a WH Smith with a pen cabinet, sometimes they have half price on everything / buy 1 get 1/2 of the second , that type of thing. They generally sell Waterman, Parker , Caran d'ache and occasionally Cross.

Also, The Pen Exchange, 13 Chichester Rd Islington,

The Pen Shop have branches in London at

Fenchurch Street

Liverpool Street Station

Oxford Street (Debenhams Department Store)

Regent Street

Depending also on your choice (and budget!) , the big jewellers that also sell penmay have something of interest (bear in mind that boutiques in London are often in arcades or suites inside other shops). Youc could try Cartier, Chaumet, Breguet, Asprey / Garrard (Asprey's used to carry pens , but I'm not sure about now), Louis Vuitton Dunhill andTiffany's (they have two lovely FPs in this years catalogue). I think "The City Organiser" are also good.

Here are some more (this is a general list, they are all stationers, most will carry pens, some very high end right down through to just paper and biros. You never know what they have in the back cabinets though! Also remember the duty free shops in the airport which also 9usually) carry Cartier and Montblanc.

Thanks, fellas!!

Wim, I did plan to go to the Portobello market but I may have read that it's active only on Saturday mornings (I could be wrong, I hope I'm wrong) - this would be an unfortunate problem for me as the wedding is sometime on a Saturday morning! :bonk:

Thanks for the link, joe!

J, wow! What a list!! (let's see how many of these shops i can cover in a day!!) The City Organiser sounds like it might be worth a visit. At the moment, I think I'll just be looking for pen accessories, probably. Travelling and storage cases, journals, stuff like that.

You can't always get what you want... but if you try sometimes... you just might find... you'll get what you need...

Grasshopper, I'm afraid your information on Portobello market is correct. It's only open on a Saturday (although there is a vegetable market at the very far end, running just about every day  ). However, if you have time in the afternoon, it's still running, especially in summer. Don't leave it too late though!

Thanks for confirming my fears, Richard. :bonk: My wife's telling me not to expect any free time on Saturday. :( Ah well, money saved, I guess. B)

(I'm trying to convince myself that it's B) )

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
