Looking For A Brown-Black ...

... that closely resembles a good stout ale once it's dry. Preferably no mixing involved, but I'll consider all suggestions. For the non-beer-drkiners, this would be a brown that's nearly indistinguishable from black, but could shade out as far as tan around the edges, kinda like this:

Anyone?

Goulet Pens Swab Shop has a few:

I like the DeAtramentis Black-Brown and Diamine Chocolate. I also have some Cult Pens Deep Dark Brown, made by Diamine. It is really dark brown.

I am supposed to use black ink at work. I like to push the limits—in more ways than one—and I try to use dark, but not-quite-black, inks. My latest favorite is Ink of the Witch by Sailor for Bung Box in Japan. It certainly looks black from a wet pen, but if you smear it, it is dark purple. Good Stuff!

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

Sailor Doyou and Diamine Chocolate Brown are on order now. The Cultpens Deep Dark Brown looks *good*, but the shipping is prohibitive at the moment. Gonna have to work up a bigger order first. :-)

Many thanks!

In wet pen Diamine Macassar is a very dark brown it many cases it ends up looking black...unless you know it's secret. The ink is well beahved and I would use it more if there was just a bit more brown, I may try it with 20% water added just to see if it lightens up a tad.

I can see that, and will probably acquire some to go along with Zhivago and Dark Matter, but it's not quite what I'm looking for in this instance. :-)

I would +1 on the Cult Pens Deep Dark Brown, but as you have said shipping ink is expensive.

I have the same problem with shipping on Noodlers ink & Lamy ink (Lamy are not selling their new colours in bottle form in Europe).

I also like the dark (could ALMOST be black but you can tell it is not!) colors. (Sailor's Bung Box INK OF THE WITCH is your "purple") BUT for me the Sailor Bung Box ESPRESSO is the brown one. It is MUCH darker than any other that I have tried & should leave most people "guessing." I got mine from Vanness probably a month ago.

I am fond of diamine chocolate brown. It always is brown, but depending on the nib it can look close to black.

This. Defo this . . . !

Stunning and complex ink that has played well in everything I've loaded it into.

I'd be curious to know the outcome of your experiments, Paul.

Me too. I have a sample of Macassar but haven't tried it yet.

Thank you for the Penman mocha! about to use it tonight. Bung Box is always a great choice, haven't met a color I don't like.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
