Too Much Ink With Ahab Flex Writing

Recommended Posts

Hello folks,

I got an Ahab pen to see what this flex writing was all about. (yes, I did the heat set)

The problem is that the pen throws down too much ink. One of the reasons is that when pushing down for flex, the nib lifts up a bit, increasing the gap between the nib and feed. Then ink puddles up there. Then when I finish the line, that big blob of ink squeezes out. So what will happen is that I am making a wide line, and at the end, the big blob of ink releases and then runs back up the stroke.

I saw some other youtube videos of this kind of flex writing, and sometimes I see that there is a lot of ink laid down, like so much that a little hemisphere forms over the line. I don't want that. I want the same amount of ink per cm^2 as with "normal" non-flex writing. Is such a thing possible?

Flex pens have feeds that give a lot of ink. Feeds not being able to keep up is the common complaint for which the solution is to deepen feed grooves. In this case you probably have one of the following issues a) using an ink that's too 'thin' b.) writing slow or c) feed grooves are too deep.

First try using a different ink and/or write faster. If it doesnt work, pull out the feed and insert a thin wire or a plastic sheet inside the groove. This should extend from the edge of the groove on the inside to about 3/4th of the way. This will cut the flow to the nib. You will have work with different wire diameters/ plastic thicknesses till you get it right.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
