Pen Tray - Review

So, this is my very first review, so I expect to violate any rules there are, please be patient with me...

I have seen in the Classifieds wooden pen trays offered by Leslie Roscoe and instantly liked the simple wooden style. But as so often there was nothing on offer that suited me perfectly. I have just switched to Diamine ink and wanted it to fit that bottle, ideally 2 of them plus space for 3 pens. So, I sent Leslie a quick e-mail and in no time there was a response, a few e-mails back and forth (all quickly answered) and I had a mock up of two styles, decided on 4 pen tray as it would be quite a wide tray with 2 bottles on the side. Leslie said it would take about 2 weeks, so I paid what was agreed and he set to work. I was kept informed and just as he sent it off I received a teaser (2 photos of the tray during the work). Next day the tray arrived (ok, I live in England as Leslie does, so I guess next day delivery to Australia will not work).

The package arrived with lovely writing on it, of course with a fountain pen. Also included a brief note with the same neat writing and then the main attraction: the pen tray. In lovely varnished wood (or whatever it is called, I have no idea about correct terms), showing the grain beautifully. The ink stands and the underside are covered in thick green felt as you know from pool/snooker/billard tables, all perfectly put together.

The quality of the item is really high, even large pens will easily fit in (the pictures below are with a Pelikan M800 and Visconti Homo sapiens, which are not small pens, as well as a Waterman Kultur) and the ink bottles are a perfect fit. Pictures say more than a thousand words, so here they come (just iPhone pictures, so it looks better in reality):

My resume:

Customer service: 10/10

Quality of the tray: 10/10

Value for money: 10/10

Just a perfectly happy customer...

Honey Oak is not usually my first choice of finish, but I must say, that looks beautiful, is if it had been sitting on your desk for the 75 years and yet new.

Really it does not get better than that.

Those are beautiful and I must admit I have seen them in the classified and have been tempted more than once.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
