Questions About A Couple Of Scarce Skylines

These questions may have been ask here before.

I recently purchased a couple of hard to find Skylines and was chatting with a friend who is also a longtime vintage pen collector about them.

One pen I have had two or three examples of before. It is an Eversharp Skyline, black and the cap has a gold filled dome, a wide cap band and a thin extra band at the top of the cap. They seem to be fairly uncommon. My friend and I were wonding why these were made.

The other pen is a very scarce Skyline with a sterling silver cap overlay. The clip and the nib are both marked Wahl, instead of Eversharp. Does anyone know why they were marked Wahl?

Syd are you out there?

I do not have photos of the pens yet, or I would have posted them. I just hooked up a new computer and have been trying set things up on it and learn how to use Windows 8.1. If you don't have 8.1 yet, you are in for a challenge! ;)

The cap design you describe is seen from time to time, but as you suggest not very often. Why were they made? That question implies a purpose other than just another variation in cap designs, like for special presentations our something. If that were the case I am not aware of it. There were a number of variations within these "extra band" models. I have seen full size pens, demo's, and mechanical pencils with this cap design.

WAHL Clips are seen on a number of Skylines, notably the "Modern Stripe" (Moire) models. The best answer to the question seems to be that pens with the WAHL label needed to be produced under that trademark/brand as required to avoid loss of the trademark.

That's seems like a very plauseable reason for them to mark the pens Wahl instead of Eversharp.

I will take some photos of the two pens soon and post them.

Thanks Syd!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
