What a beautiful and functional desk. Love the dark mahogany colored wood. There is something about the wood which is warm and inviting to a writer, even vicariously. Imagine, a desk said to be one Charles Dickens actually used. The chair does not appear comfortable at all! Guess you had to be there sitting down and writing to enjoy. -_- The stark slanting angle symbolically represents the intellectual decline of mankind today. Wonder what he thought back then about humanity?

That is beautiful.

When I was much younger, I so loved to write. I wrote short stories, sent correspondence to several friends and family, and generally loved my time spent with pen in hand.

Time, and later on arthritis, robbed me of that for so long. With my interest in fountain pens and the wonderfully light touch they require, that old flame has been re lit. My older sister used to enjoy getting my letters, as, aside from catching up with what was going on in my life, she said she loved what she called my (then) lovely handwriting. Perhaps I will renew that old habit. My handwriting isn't as beautiful as it once was, but it gets better every day.

That desk stirs something deep within my memories. Thanks for posting it.

FP Mike,

I hope you find a large diameter section and a nib with a light touch for you to return to your love of writing.

I don't know, my dad had an old wooden chair and it was surprisingly comfortable :)

I ran the photo through PhotoDraw, lightened it up some, and removed some of the glare from the window in order to examine it further.

That is one massive piece of furniture, and the desk is only part of the entire assembly. The desk and the cabinet to the left appear to nest into a larger piece with a mirror over the desk and book shelves over the cabinet.

The desk is gorgeous and the rest of the setting (chair, rug) makes justice to it.

Concerning the chair, I have a Thonet armchair very similar in its basic design to the one in the photo (although not as beautiful or elaborate) and is quite comfortable. In fact, it's the one I use at my home desk.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
