Has Anyone Seen An 0558, Seeking Info

Tom Heath

Recommended Posts

Seeking any information about this rare beauty.

A fellow collector has asked me to help him research information about the 58

such as when it may have been produced

The Nib states Made in USA 8 ( not New York)

It is a F to 2xBB chisel pointed , so I am calling it an Italic

The Gold fill is in a Basket Weave Pattern, it has personalization

The Barrel in has the appropriate imprint but it is weak

The Lever finger bar does not have the expected globe, has anyone seen such with just a rounded circle, it is small for the pen but in very good condition

There isn't any sign of brassing or other wear for this probably 80+ year old pen

other than the expected factory imprinting at the base of the barrel is weak.

In the attachments hopefully will cover what I have talked about here

My handwriting is not penmanship quality so in my own way I am attempting to illustrate nib range,

No that is not a bleeding black blood arm on my stature holder.. : )

Your thoughts and comments are appreciated

Know of any comparable sales or value range would also be helpful..

need more photos just ask

Hello Tom, That's a wonderful pen!

I had one in the mid 1990s. It was like yours, a Basketweave, sans engraving, and with a bit crisper imprints.

I sold it at Bonham's and, I believe, it brought about 3000 quid. I'll dig out the catalog and check for the exact price. Mine had the globe on the lever. This is the first one I have seen since that time.

Best,

Daniel

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
