Ok To Transfer Same Ink, Pen To Pen?

I'm not sure it's even that. Both pens are already loaded with spores (assuming you don't live sealed inside a cleanroom), and if anything starts growing in one of the pens, it's because something is wrong with the bottle of ink. You'll have to toss the whole thing anyway, regardless of whether you fill each pen separately from the bad ink or not.

I would do it and it is not even the case of saving a few pennies; it is not wanting to waste anything that is so easily saved.

Actually, no. Not to save money. Because it seems like a natural, everyday sort of thing to do. At an age when my friends and relatives are dropping away like flies, when all sorts of dire things threaten the population of the earth, the fear of fungal contamination of one or more fountain pens strikes me as almost hilariously trivial.

It is eccentric enough to write with FPs. One courts sensation and excitement. (And here I am, posting a message to a Web site.) Water and other natural resources are worth worrying about. Inequality of income, between persons and nations, ditto. Terrible things happening to people one loves. Ink contamination: not everyone chooses to get excited by the same distractions.

I agree with you.

There are people being wrongfully murdered. Only now with the introduction of good innocent bystanders willing to risk themselves by recording the tragedies are others finally willing to admit there have been countless others which were not recorded and ended up the same way. People want to make serious what someone does with their individually purchased fountain pens and inks. Authorities born with definitive knowledge. Suppose the person agrees and then proceeds to do what they were going to do anyway? In the end these are all rhetorical questions someone asks to get opinions of others and then either the question was rhetorical or they ultimately must decide for themselves. Not a forum of experts, just people with opinions. In the end there will either be someone who will consider doing it; someone who is doing it; or someone who sees no problem with it. Guess what? They probably are in either of the sides of this chorus. They are probably too busy filling up their TWSBI and Montblanc with the same ink. The character Ebenezer Scrooge was a stingy man, but he also lived in a big house and enjoyed the finer things in life. Happy Monday! This is going to be a great week.

This entire thread has become almost hilariously trivial. This does not reflect on the OP. He's asking a valid question. However, as it continues (down the drain), the thread has become completely inconsequential. I wouldn't do it, but if you want to transfer ink to another pen, do so and save a few pennies. If you don't want to transfer ink, don't do it." Don't worry. Be happy." B)

I transfer ink from one pen to another all the time. No problems yet.

my sentiment exactly. I was raised by parents who went through The Great Depression. Waste not, want not, make do, do without, and use it up before you throw it out are some of the cardinal points they left with me.

Also, while I would not trivialize the impact of fungi, by this time, I've opened and shut the ink pots so many times, dipped so many pens and syringes in to fill, it hardly seems that transferring from one pen to another represents a massive infusion of heretofore unseen biota.

I could be totally wrong..I've been wrong many times.

OK..that's pretty disgusting... reading the thread, sounds like it's certain inks which do this, and that glop is either fungus-caused, or the result of crystallization...

again, I don't want to trivialize what can happen; just trying to gauge against what I'm seeing and hearing..

No problems with the pens but I should mention that my one hand has only four fingers after a contaminated ink spill!

Maybe I should have admitted that I do have an affiliation. I do belong to The Special Interests. I am one of those people who bought bottles of British Racing Green when Montblanc discontinued it. I and it must be thousands of other people are writing with ink whose latest possible use-by date is June 2013.

Why take the chance???? Good question. Because I like the color a lot, and the flow properties. I can't buy a newer bottle, no matter how much money I'm willing to spend. And, to introduce a note of the empirical here, it doesn't seem to be a seriously large probability, that my pens are going to come to grief. BRG has lots of fans at FPN. But FPN doesn't have a lot of postings about BRG users coming to grief, does it?

Compared with the chances one takes by riding a bicycle, riding in an automobile, crossing the street on foot here in San Francisco, and countless other contingencies, I'm not taking what I consider a serious risk. But I am not evangelizing here. All of us wish we were omnipotent, and learn that we aren't. After that we choose which foolish excitements to make our own. Apart from BRG, I am thinking of buying another pen. Or two.

This is not the first time I've read about people snapping up some discontinued beloved ink.

Do other manufacturers ever step up and either purchase the recipe, or attempt to brew their own version of the discontinued ink too satisfy the fans?

I do it all the time, with my Parker 45's. I always have one in my pocket, but

it is one of eight or ten that I rotate, when I get tired of looking at the current

one. Pull the cartridge. Install it into the second pen. Flush and put away

the first. So far, no fatalities among minors.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
