Greetings From Oregon

Hello everyone,

I have recently been afflicted by fountain pen syndrome...

Since I was a kid I have always loved a good pen (think child playing around with the massive pen selection at Kinko's), but up until about 2 weeks ago I had never delved into the realm of fountain pens. My advisor in grad school always writes with one (Lamy Studio w/14k nib), and she has impeccable handwriting, so I figure why not give it a go. A short search later I found that Pilot metros are a great place to start. It was instantly the most gratifying writing experience I have ever had! I was hooked, with no hope of letting go.... Needless to say, I have been using a fountain pen for 2 weeks and now have 2 Metros, 1 Al-Star (with a F and 1.5 Stub nib), a TWSBI 580AL, converters for all, 2 bottles of ink, and a bunch of Rhodia.

Some may say that I have a problem (wife?), but I figured I would be in good company here on this forum! :D I look forward to tapping into your wealth of knowledge and chatting about pens.

Cheers,

-Tyler

PS - My precious TWSBI just arrived yesterday, couldn't help but show it off! How can you rotate pic in post, file itself isn't sideways...?

So space and time are linked together. As we are looking across space, we are looking back in time. The further and further away those stars are the further back in time you are looking. Now you are seeing a star that is say six thousand years ago. Imagine somebody at that star looking at us They would be seeing us as we were six thousand years ago. Which of those two is now? - Alan Parsons Project The Time Machine - Temporalia (Paraphrased)

Welcome, Tyler !

It's okay. Your TWSBI looks very nice when I am lying on my sofa. :P

Don't you love the way the sunlight shines through the ink in the pen barrel ?

It's great to see that there are so many others in Oregon on here. I am in Corvallis, but if there are events along the I-5 I would likely make the trip!

Bit by the fountain pen bug, eh? There are worse afflictions. Anyway, welcome aboard from an annual July visitor to Oregon, trawling for books. Maybe we'll bump into each other at Gold Beach Books or Powell's. Look for the Edison Collier Persimmon Swirl in the shirt pocket. Cheers.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

Sounds to me like you have the makings for a Portland Pen Posse (PPP) here. All you have to do is set up a time and a place. One of your local coffee houses would work. Then everyone shows up with her or his favorite pens, inks papers, etc. and you share stories and ink. Bring along a few uninked pens because someone will be willing to share some ink. They usually last one to two hours and everyone goes home and writes Thank-You notes the rest of the day. (I just made up the last part!)

The Las Vegas Pen Posse has been meeting for several years. The original, as far as I know, was in the San Francisco Bay Area. Los Angeles has a very large and active group. They have a dinner every year at The LA Pen show that is loads of fun.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
