Sailor Brown

This is Sailor Brown, no longer in production. I managed to snatch (probably) the one and only bottle on the Chinese online market. Visvamitra's review introduced me to this ink and I love it. It has become my favourite brown.

The ink may look more saturated than it's supposed to be in this sample because I added a trace of Photo-flo. The ink itself is not dry at all, but my Pilot 912 FA is very picky about inks and demands the wettest inks possible.

Comparison

Browns compared:

Sailor Brown, Sailor Bung Box Nostalgia, Hopjesbruin, J. Herbin Lie de thé, Noodler's Golden Brown, R&K Sepia, Iroshizuku Yama-guri and Sailor Doyou.

BB Nostalgia is quite close in writing, but still not as rich a colour as Sailor Brown.

Lucky you... I bought this Brown (last bottle) in a shop here in Toronto a few years ago.... had no idea how special it was. Went back for more (just in case) .. but was told it had been discontinued for years.

 

 

I just LOVE your comparisons... you always pick my favorite color to compare too... ... How do you do that??

It's a good thing I am not partial to browns, otherwise I'd be really sad about this ink. It's quite lovely! Still, in my opinion, not as excellent as MB SG 2005, of which I have 7 back up bottles, so I shall still sleep well tonight.

it's no longer available? damn. this is such a great shade of brown. i have many sailor inks but all of the seasonal editions. now i wish i have gotten a bottle of this brown.

Although I don't have the Sailor Brown to compare it to side-by-side, Monteverde Brown may be a possible contender as an alternative. It certainly has exceptional shading & a similar rich tone. It's fairly inexpensive too.

Sailor brown isnt discontinued but its discontinued to be sold to retailers... apparently the resident ink mixer in Japan uses the ordinary inks to use for his ink clinics

I thought that I'd found my go-to brown, the dark and pretty Noodler's Walnut, but I have a few brown (more like brown-orange) inks, like Akkerman Hopjesbruin and Montblanc Carlo Collodi and Pelikan Bran, and I like the effect those inks on the same page (mostly written in the Walnut, with a sentence of paragraph written in one or more of those other inks).

 

If I could get my hands on the Sailor Brown, though... I think I would like it A LOT.

as I said the ink can not be acquired the ink is in the hands of Osamu Ishimura I think its exclusive to him.... seeing that he's Sailor's ink mixer

Huh?

 

 

If you mean the "trace of Photo-Flow"... you don't need to worry. Surfactants are part of any ink. Manufactures add surfactant to their own ink.. a trace of it, won't change the color composition of the ink.

 

Using a dip nib makes an ink looks ten times more saturated than adding a trace of Photo-Flow.

I used an infinitesimal amount of Photo-flo to help with the flow. It's just like putting the ink in a wetter pen. The colour is not altered.

Perhaps someone would be prepared to co-ordinate a widescale Sailor Brown comparison, the same as Amberleas's recent PPS one? Between us we might find a close enough substitute. Of course, someone with a supply of Sailor Brown would need to be generous enough to spare some to compile & send out comparison sheets.......
