Sailor Hachimitsu (Honey)

This is Sailor Honey, or Hachimitsu, from the Onago-iro Days line. It's said that Honey makes a pretty close replacement for Apricot. I don't have (the chance to get) Apricot so I can't compare the two. But Honey is gorgeous.

Writing samples

Great shading between yellow, orange and red.

Sheen

It has a white/silver sheen to it. This one is written on onionskin paper, where inks are brought out to their full sheening potential.

Comparison

All my oranges (yellows, ambers, orange-reds) compared.

Photos

Some photos, to give a better idea about the colours.

Looks a bit like Noodler's Apache Sunset. Not a color I like, but the sheen and shading are pretty.

Thanks for the review (and the tip about onionskin paper -- I think we might have some floating around the house, although I'm not sure why).

THANK YOU! This is a wonderful review & a great sampling of some of my favorite inks. I received this ink a week or so ago & just haven't gotten around to trying it. It was an ink that Atsu apologised for my having to wait until it was "blended." I have many of the inks your show samples for but this seemed like an additional one I HAD to have. AND you have shown me why!

Awesome review Lgsoltek, the use of onion skin paper to being out the sheen especially. Nifty.

A pity this ink, and the other Onago-Iro Days 'female' inks are special order from Sailor, Japan itself and currently back ordered something like three to four weeks.

Any chance you will do a review of Komorebi aka "sunlight filtering through tree leaves" next?

I wish I lived in North America, then we could have a lot to share!

I think Apache looks much "dirtier".

I never really saw a silver sheen in regular, non-onion skin paper use, but I do love this ink. It's pretty much the same colour as Kin-mokusei and Apricot, but I do love it so. :)

I see the sheen on Rhodia paper too, but it has to be a wet pen.

I don't think so. I don't have that one and it's not really a colour I like a lot. Maybe I can order a sample...

Thank you for the review and for all of these beautiful photos! This definitely looks like a good replacement for Apricot when when my current bottle runs out. I'm especially happy to see that they have the same kind of sheen on Rhodia with a wet pen :)

Wow, this is beautiful. Dammit. I had decided that the accessible Iro Fuyu-gaki was the orange for me.

I LOVE the way it shades yellow to orange. It reminds of M. Graham's Gamboge watercolor. Gorgeous!

Wow, this is gorgeous! I don't like oranges much, so I'd never have noticed this ink, but your review (especially the comparison pics) has me converted.

I was once a bottle of ink, Inky Dinky Thinky Inky, Blacky Minky Bottle of Ink!

A pity. I'm a fan of both your reviews and of dark shading nature greens like Onago-Iro Days Komorebi. Them together would be awesome.

Anyone want to hook Lgsoltek up with a sample out of their stash?

I only ever tried it in a 540 B, so perhaps that's why. I'll give it a shot in one of my gusher pens. And maybe I'll order some Onago-iro back ups. :) I wouldn't mind having a back up of Honey or About To Leave. :)

  • 4 months later...

Great review. I must find more info on this onionskin paper :)

I just ordered some and it should arrive tomorrow.

If you don't mind it folded, I would happily send you some in a airmail envelope.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
