Easterbrook Challenge

Recommended Posts

After putting it off to long I decided to gather all my Easterbrook fountain pens. Put them in working order and decide on which ones I am going to keep.

After I finished 3 days later I decided to take a family photo of all my pens.

When I was looking at the photo I noticed something that did not fit in the photo.

Lets see who is first to pick out what does not belong in the photo below........

Good luck!

An all metal Esty? Or is that a grey Esty with metal cap and the pic is just playing with my brain?

To my knowledge, Esterbrook did not manufacture towels.

Well, I don't know, first nib up in right side with a small protuberance destined to insert cartridges or piston feeders seems not belong to there.

Now comes the hard part. I have decided I want to only keep 5 pens. Which five do I keep?

If it was my collection I would keep:

The blue dollar

The black tranny

And one each SJ, LJ, and J - whichever I like best (color and condition).

The Dollar pen has Electa-Point Flex nib so I will keep it and the Black Tranny has a 2048 nib I installed on it boycotts you hit two of the five. They both write very nice in my hand. My avatar was drown with the Dollar Pen.

I have a question. Is there a reason we are calling these Easterbrook Pens?

I've bought Easterbrooks on eBay, and they looked just like these.

And a quick search just turned up a surprisingly similar RESTERBROOK.

That blue dollar is sure purty, I was going to ask about it too. I can see why you'd want to keep it. It's a stunner.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
