What Pelikan Do I Bought?

Ok, im a Japanese FP FAN, mainly Pilots. My last previous purchase was a Sailor Sapporo B an it was a huge disappointment. Really nice feel and finish but the writing was boring, dry, etc.

Going mad I wanted to try something different, so I thought PELIKAN, but I find modern Pels expensive, so I went to a Mexican EBAY, and found this for 200usd

It says W Germany and for the size: 12.6 1.2 I think is an M400, it is traveling by mail but do I score a good pen or not?

It does indeed look like a green striped M400 made sometime between 1982 and 1990. These are great pens. Congratulations on your purchase. You should find the nib to be wet with a good bit of spring to it and maybe a small touch of flex. Looks to be in great shape.

PELIKAN - Too many birds in the flock to count. My pen chest has proven to be a most fertile breeding ground.

The M400 is a very good pen. Nice choice. I use Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue with my Pelikans and they write like a dream. Enjoy.

The W.Germany nibs are reputed to be a tad better than the '90's nibs in the M400's...same for the 800's.

The nib is a true regular flex nib with a bit of spring. It is not so fat and blobby as a modern Pelikan so will write more towards the nib size, than modern. Will have a nice clean line. Give you a good ride.

I say true regular flex, in many companies no longer make that, but a semi-nail that is harder to break....like the modern post '97 Pelikan M400.

You have the best of the 'modern' '82/3-'90 nibs in the W.Germany ones. . The other Germany '90-97 M400 are also better than modern.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
