Special/limited Edition Recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hubby and I were at the O'hare airport today and came across the Montblanc boutique that is located right by the chili's.

We poked our heads in to see if they had any of the limited edition inks, but alas, nothing for me. However, they did have the Brahms special edition that caught hubby's eye. In particular he really liked the nib design and detail with the eagle (while I got a kick out of the tuning fork).

Before hubby commits to the Brahms, are there any other special or limited edition that we should take a look at or consider? What is your favorite of the limited or special editions?

Current Wishlist:

Visconti, Visconti, and...more Visconti! (And some ST Duponts too). (Ok fine, getting on the Omas and Montblanc trains now too. Toot toot.) (And maybe on the Montegrappa one too, but only for the Miyas.)

I like the Hemingway and both of the Dumas.

I agree.

The Agatha Christie fountain pen is incredible, too, but not within my pen budget.

Of all the WEs, my favorites have been the Dumas, Poe, Wilde, Dostoevsky and Proust. I'm not as big a fan of the later models, but my aesthetic sensibilities may be more conservative than others.

My 2 cents...

I'd say that choosing an LE is a very personal decision, and different factors of design have different impacts on different people.

Personally, I prefer the WEs and LEs that are modeled after original vintage models such as the Hemingway, Dumas, Christie, Proust, Schiller, Fitzgerald, or Faulkner. Actually, any one of the WEs from the first 10 years.

I also have strong preferences for the materials used, such as the marbled acrylic in the Dumas, Poet & Wilde, the amber of the cap on the Schiller, or the "pearl" barrel on the Fitzgerald. And while I like the Kafka for it's material, I'm less enamored with the WEs such as the Cervantes, Verne, or Shaw.

I had once aspired to collect all of the "Dragons" (the Meister Porcelain model, Year of the Dragon 2000, Xing Dynasty, etc) but as I developed as a pen user, my tastes changed, and I turned to the original vintage models of Montblanc.

Good luck with your endeavors.

If he likes music, perhaps the Leonard Bernstein

"how do I know what I think until I write it down?"

OP - do you have more parameters like max cost, must be available be in a boutique, used, etc.? Otherwise you are going to get a list of lovely pens that will be hard to find or way too expensive.

I mean I could mention the black widow 88 skeleton for $40k. :)

Good question! I think max would be about $800-1000. He did see the Einstein and thought it was super cool due to the markings and their symbolism (he's a big science guy), until he learned that the special-special edition of that pen was like $20k. :)

For that budget, you should be looking at WE and the SE of the Great Characters. Probably some Donation pens will be whithin your budget. I think the Brahms is a beautiful pen. It is simple, elegant and has a great design. The clip is a beauty.

One other factor you might consider is size: most of the WEs are based on the 146, but a few of the WEs are based on the 149. If your husband likes a larger pen, this might help narrow down the field, at least a little. (I'm looking at you, Hemingway...or at least I wish I was looking at a Hemingway!)

139, not 149. I am guessing this was a typo. :) The two pens in the 139 size (smaller than 149) are Hemmingway (which is not in the OPs price range, probably even if it was broken) and Dumas (which is in the price range used).

There are some of the WEs that are longer than the 146 like the Kafka.

What about the Lennon unlimited. The black vinyl record like surface and large size are quite nice.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
