Hello From Mexico!

Talina

Recommended Posts

Hello! I´m a newbie to this forum! My name is Talina.

My love of fp started in my teens, my parents gave me a Lamy pen for my high school graduation. Afterwards I've purchased disposable fp but lately I've wanted to improve my penmanship and only own a Lamy, not flex point. (pardon my lack of appropiate wording, English is my second languaje) I believe the model is Safari

I've downloaded Palmer's Commercial Calligraphy manual and my father has just given me a copy of Palmer's Penmanship Budget (still waiting for it to arrive! its on its way from the seller) and I want to ask for your help. I'm 37 and a mother of three little kids, so I'm on a very tight budget. What pens do you suggest I should look for to start my collection and practice my penmanship? I want to eventually purchase a dip pen, but I have no idea how or where to start! any pointers will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you all in advance! and greetings from a VERY warm Mexico!

Bienvenida!

You are starting a very slippery slope! But a wonderful one. Here you will find a fantastic group of FP lovers that will give you wise and seasoned advise. There are some masters of calligraphy and some dip pen experts.

As for me, if you live in Mexico City, I can give you some pointers as on where to look, try and buy fantastic pens, both dip and traditional.

If you are interested in calligraphy, I suggest you look into different kind of nibs, paper and inks rather than different kinds of pens.

Hi!

I´m from Mexico too! I´ve been trying for ages to find someone near me who loves FPs as much as me :D

I´m in Querétaro, let me know if you´re near! I started with a Lamy ABC given to me by my Godfather as a child, and have been hooked ever since.

Welcome!

Welcome, Talina !

The LAMY Safari is a very well-made pen. I will endure for decades. The Safari model

can use several different nibs, which easily can be changed by you. It is an inexpensive

way to try different nibs, though I do not recall reading of any calligraphy nibs for the Safari.

Sorry that I have no experiences to share on dip pens. Others are coming soon.

Write with joy.

Zum Augenblicke dürft ich sagen:
Verweile doch, du bist so schön !

Hola Talina! Saludos desde GUADALAJARA,

para caligrafia puedes buscar la Pilot Parallel, which you can find on mercadolibre.com.mx or lumen.com.mx it would cost you around 150 pesos. It is great for calligraphy.

For dip pens you can use a speedball kit it can cost you around 350 pesos, or try a inexpensive kit for 100 pesos (lumen) for fountain pens nicer than the Lamy you can try a Pilot Metropolitan if you enjoy fine points or a Namiki Falcon, both you can purchase on the mentioned pages.

Pens:

Sheaffer Targa M / Parker 45 M / Sheaffer Imperial M / Parker Arrow

Lamy Vista F / Lamy Safari EF / PELIKAN M400 M Vintage (for sale)

Pilot Custom 74 F / Namiki Falcon SF / Pilot VP M / Pilot Prera / Pilot Metropolitan F M

Sailor Sapporo B / Platinum 3776 BB Stub

Pilot Custom 91 SFM / Pilot Custom 74 Dark Blue B

Bienvenida....

It seems there are more and more Mexicans at the FPN and it is a real pleasure to have them here...

Since your budget is tight and you are interested in Calligraphy, keep on writing with your Lamy Safari (great pen) but you can also start getting Esties (Esterbrook) some of them manufactured here during the fifties of last century, they are not expensive, easy to find (Stationary shops in Cinco de mayo downtown Mexico City) and they have a lot of different nibs to write with, specially for Calligraphy...

Buena suerte, Ariel

Thank you all for your kind responses! I will try to look for the pens you have mentioned in Lumen. (I live near Guadalajara but it's not very easy for me to travel with three kids!) If any other mexicans here know which other stores have online options, Id' really appreciate your help! Muchas gracias! y gracias por hacerme sentir bienvenida!

I've started on the Palmer and got my kids and my dad to start too! I'm a bad influence, I'm afraid!

It is not difficult to find American pens there... Esterbrook, Sheaffer's, Parker Wereaver and Eversharp, and usually at good prices... I do not often see Waterman's which attract more my attention. You can also take a look at Plaza del Angel which is a flea market close to downtown... all depends what you are looking for and how difficult is for you to go to Mexico City if you do not live there...

Hola Karina, saludos cariñosos desde Sabinas Coahuila. Warm Greetings.

Checa plumas fuente en www.mercadolibre.com.mx, ni te imaginas las preciosidades que vas a encontrar, Parkers, Sheaffers, Montblancs (cuidado con las imitaciones ja ja), Esterbrooks impresionantes etc.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
