Help Identifying Mb

Guys,

First Post!

Found this in an old cupboard in a box (not an MB Box).

I checked the MB Website but not listed as a currently retained/produced pen so I am guessing this is some old version not in current production.

This is with a converter and has a stub (Oblique B??) nib and the body is mostly heavily tarnished silver. Says 925 on the cap.

Even though it is a very old pen (and may be was never inked), it writes as smooth as my 146.

Need help identifying the pen (and the type of nib) and and help with current pricing (for new as well as a used). Also wanted to know if I can use anything to get the tarnish off without damaging the pen.

Thanks.

Welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell.

It is very hard to tell for sure but likely a 144 Solitaire. Are there any proof marks on the body and cap?

It's a Mb Silver Solitaire 144 C/C pen.

Mb supply their own silver polishing cloths with their silver pens. You can try any gentle silver polishing cloth, but be very careful and just wipe over, don't rub hard. Check where the silver hallmark is in the panel next to the clip and don't rub that. Also, bear in mind that the gold coloured parts are only plated, so be careful to not rub those very much.

There is no way to tell what the nib is although that tip looks more like a B or even a BB than anything smaller. It's not an oblique as that would be cut off at an angle

It looks like it may need a good flush out after soaking in lukewarm water

You can just see the signs of the silver hallmark in the panel on the cap.

Wow ... that was quick! Thanks guys...

ID positive ... its for sure a 144SP. Listed here:

The pen says 925 on the Cap.. guess that's the Silver Hallmark that Chrissy mentions! With those warnings, I would rather not attempt to polish the pen myself... I am happy carrying a tarnished pen...

BTW is that really a 1.5K US$ Pen? Any ideas on resale pricing for used (and tarnished) pens?

Thanks

People sometimes pay crazy prices for stuff on eBay but I would guess that price as high by about $1000.00. Here is a 146 listed for under $900.00.

Thanks for that Jar!

That settles that if a once inked 146 Sterling Silver costs 900 US$ ... then a 144SP (new or used) should cost much lesser ... agreed. But any idea how much?

I would guess $400.00-500.00 range. If the nib is stubbish B or BB closer to high end, any other nib near low end.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
