Finished Restoring My Unbranded Bhcr Coin Filler.

I've finished restoring the old BCHR coin filler I found at an antique mall. New talced sac and J-Bar, flushed the nib, feed and section. Pen is now sucking up and expelling ink easily with a few presses of a coin, but it's not writing! I'm just wondering if it would be worth it to send off to a nib meister to get it writing as nice as it looks (nib looks good to me, no damage that I can see), or would that just be throwing good money after bad?

This is my first pen of this type, so I have no idea of value. I don't want to spend the money to get it to write like a pro (even though it's pretty flexy!) if it just isn't worth it to restore back to that level. If it's worth a trip to a nib meister I'll gladly keep going with it and do that so it writes as nice as it should, (and then probably sell it). If it's not worth much, I'll just keep it as-is for my collection.

Any opinions or help please?

Light pressure shows some decent flex.

Did you take out the feed and nib from the section & clean the feed?

The only other issue would be whether the nib was seated deeply enough on the feed.

Otherwise the pen looks right.

Also check to see that the feed is close enough to the bottom of the nib. The HR on old pens like this tends to shrink a bit and the nib can pull away from the feed. If the gap is too big ink won't flow. There are various posts on how to reseat an HR feed over in the repair forum. It's a pretty easy thing to do.

Nice pen with a nice nib. In my humble and highly prejudiced opinion this is a pen worth writing with. Enjoy.

I did not, I never do any type of nib work myself, and I NEVER take the nib and feed out unless I know I'm replacing one or both.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
