Aurora Optima - Dripping Nib

Recommended Posts

I have two Aurora Optimas, one is black with Rhodium plated gold nib and the other a blue Auroloide with a gold nib. I also have an Aurora Talentum with a gold nib.

Lately, the gold nib of the blue Auroloide started to have flow problems. The ink uncontrollably accumulates in the feeder and starts to drip. I tried using different inks but the results are the same.

At first, I though that the Optima piston seal was broken. To test this, I swapped the nibs of my Talentum and Optima. The Talentum nib, which has no problems, was working well in the Optima. The problematic Optima nib, however, continued dripping in the Talentum. So, I believe it is the nib that has a problem and not the Optima pen.

Also, my other Optima with the Rhodium plated gold nib has no problems.

Has anyone experienced this problem as well? Are there other possible reasons why this nib suddenly started to drip ink?

Thank you very much in advance.

I only have two pens - an Aurora Optima and others.

I'm no expert but sounds like a problematic feed to me. Did you try washing the feed and nib assembly thoroughly with mild soap water or ammonia solution? Maybe thee are some fine debris in the feed that are causing the ink to drip.

I haven't had this problem with any of my pens.

sounds like a leak associated with the nib unit.

possibilities: cracked nib unit sleeve, also examine the O-ring that seals the nib unit to section.

Sorry for the late reply. I was away for the Easter break.

Thank you very much for your suggestions.

I will follow the suggestions, both of which I have not yet looked into. I just simply swapped the Optima and Talentum nibs and that is how I suspect it is the nib unit. I will have to disassemble the nib unit to see what is the problem.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
