How Does The Platinum Cool Nib Compare With The Ptl-10000?

A discussion on another thread prompted this question: I have a Platinum Cool in both fine and medium. How do these steel nibs compare with the 18k fine and medium nibs on the PTL-10000 and Maki-E? I assume the 18k nibs are smoother and springier, but do correct me if I'm wrong about that. I'm also interested in whether the 18k nibs have narrower or better-defined lines than their steel counterparts. Thanks in advance.

I (well, now my wife does) have a Balance, and a Kanazawa Maki-e. Both are F nibbed.

The Kanazawa is definitely softer, more springy than soft, and not really flexy unless you push fairly hard. More comfortable to write with.

The lines they put down are very comparable, and the steel Balance is close to being as smooth as the Kanazawa. Very close.

That's too small a sample to be statistically valid, etc, but as far as our experience goes, they're very close.

I'm thinking about getting another of each some time. Because different inks.

Thanks. Is the Kanazawa more comfortable because of the nib, because the pen is slightly thinner and just a bit smaller than the Balance, or for another reason?

  • 2 weeks later...

I've experienced 2 Balances, both from Ebay at about 20-25 euros.

The first one is pretty nice, smooth with a nice amount of feedback, but it was really dry.

So I ordered (about 1 year later....) the second one. And the nib was SERIOUSLY OUT OF ALIGNMENT and SUPER SUPER WET.

I don't think I would buy another Balance.

The platinum 3776 I got for 66 euros was really nice though. Havn't used a ptl 10000

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
