Platinum Preppy Leak

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I bought 3 Platinum Preppy fountain pens. 2 of the 3 leak as shown in the picture. I converted to an eyedropper with no leaks in the barrel. The ink will leak at the sides of the nib and feed after writing for about 30-45 seconds. Anyone no how to fix or do I just have to end up buying another one and hope for the best?

Sorry for the poor pic, taken with phone.

If you convert a Preppy to an eyedropper, you need to keep it at least 1/2-2/3 full, or you'll encounter the phenomenon of 'burping' - the air in the barrel heats up while in contact with your hand, and forces ink out as you write. From the picture above, it looks like this pen is almost empty? Try filling 'er up, and see if that solves the problem!

Jamerelbe,

Thanks, this is the third pen. I bought 3, the first one was fine, but the second one had the same problem, and it was 2/3 full....but will try your suggestion to see if it helps

Might also be worth removing and re-seating the nib and feed - in case it's not inserted properly? Just grab nib and feed together, and pull straight - there's a long 'rod' section that runs all the way through the fins to the top of the ink reservoir.

Yes, did that as well...should the nib come off the feed easily...as I can pull the nib off the feed while the feed is still in the pen.

Mine come off easily, though it requires a good grip and a reasonably firm tug. It needs to be pushed back in firmly, too - but judging from your picture, that doesn't seem to be the problem. Like any other pen (especially at the lower end of the price point), you *will* occasionally buy a 'lemon' - but I wouldn't want to jump to that conclusion too quickly. Did the pens perform ok with a cartridge or converter?

That's my next step...I only tried the one pen that's not leaking with the cartridge...the other two, that leaks, I just went straight to an eyedropper.

Thanks

Hello.

First, please make sure you put Silicone grease on the threads.

Then, refill the whole barrel instead of putting just a few drops of ink into the barrel.

The problem is due to the increase of volume of the air when it gets warmer sometimes.

I've been playing with eyedroppers and Preppys for almost a year now. I keep one in my office in the basement which is kind cool year round. That one starts to leak about 15 sec. after I start holdong it. The others are OK in the summer but leak in the winter.

It's all expansion, if the pen is cooler than your hand, the heat from your hand will expand the air/ink in the barrel and it will force it's way out the nib in a big blob.

I went to refilling cartridges and converters (which are very cheap on eBay), no more problems.

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income. - Errol Flynn

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
