Sresemann Unboxing

My new 805 Stresemann arrived today! Plenty has already been written about this new release, so rather than writing a review with lots of comments, I thought I'd simply post a more minimalist photo essay of the unboxing. If the photos leave you any questions, I will certainly try to answer them.

Sorry about the reflections which look like distortions in the material. There are no distortions!

Don't they make a beautiful, dressy pair?

Love that side by side shot. The Stresemann is my daily carry right now and that M nib is writing wide, wet, and smooth. How do you find yours? I'm only experience a slight hesitation at startup but once it's flowing, there is no stopping it. Congrats on the new bird though and thanks for the great pics. Enjoy!

PELIKAN - Too many birds in the flock to count. My pen chest has proven to be a most fertile breeding ground.

Really a fine pen and some day I'll also get one. I find that the prices of Pelikan vintage fountain pens that are selling on ebay and other pen dealers on the web are selling for prices that are lower than they should be. It's a good thing for some people but bad for collectors. I don't know why the market value of these pens is so low when the quality and workman-ship is so superior to other major pen companies. I hope that vintage Pelikans will soon get the increase in value that is long overdue.

that nib looks wider than a medium

Of course the picture is quite magnified. The nib looks to me and writes about the same as the Tortoise, which is also a medium.

Thanks! It writes like pretty much every other Pelikan I have owned - both of them! Nice and wet and lush, seeming a bit broader than my Omas mediums.

"value" is a mercurial concept

I don't quite get your meaning by "mercurial". Do you mean it fluctuates ?

Color me confused. How is lower prices for vintage Pelikans bad for collectors? I would think that collectors would be reveling in lower prices, enabling to them (us) to get more or at least more valuable vintage pens, am I missing something?

Perhaps you mean lower prices is a bad thing for vintage pen sellers?

Is the Stressman about the same size as a M800

It is an M800. An M805 to be exact. Same standard dimensions.

For Pelikan, pens ending in 0 (M600, M800, M1000, etc.) means a gold trim, those ending in 5 are palladium (silver-colored) trim (M605, M805, M1005, etc.)

The first number (6, 8, 10) denotes the family. The M800/805 are identical, except for 24k gold vs. palladium plating.

when you try to put your thumb on it and make it objective and definitive, it squirts out from under you. And is toxic.

my way of saying that "value" fluctuates from buyer to seller and their conjunction.

smokey, even

try to define "worth," and you turn the key in the lock on the door of Limbo

Mine did not come in a circular box, instead a regular rectangular one. Perhaps it has to do with the country of the dealer or that you got a nice bottle of ink with it.

It depends on the dealer and customer request. That circular box is the G16 gift box that has space for a bottle of Edelstein ink. Some retailers were offering a gift for pre-orders; this would probably be a G16 with a free bottle of ink.

The rectangular box is the somewhat more standard G15, although Pelikan has other boxes too. I also understand that dealers have to order the boxes individually, as Pelikan charges for the boxes that the pens come in. If you wanted to, you could request a G16, but you might have to pay extra.

Beautiful shots! Love the Stresemann and tortoise when paired together. And that big cake box too! Congrats on your latest acquisition.

Darn, darn, darn, darn, darn! I do not need another 805. I do not need another 805. Repeat after me: I do not need another 805.

Dang, that's pretty!

Congrats!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
