Constructive Feedback?

Hello!

I am sort of new to calligraphy... By "sort of new", I mean my old art professor tried to teach me how to do calligraphy back in high school, but it wasn't all that serious, and I wasn't very talented at it.

I recently picked up a few scroll & brush pens by Zig, and I decided to experiment with them tonight, copying out a quote I found on facebook.

Any constructive feedback on how to improve would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance! :)post-120845-0-54732500-1426692258_thumb.jpg

Oh! I am not sure why that came out sideways... And I'm not exactly sure how to fix it, either. It is right side up in the camera roll on my phone... :( sorry, total rookie mistake...

No problem, Nicole, just remember to check the orientation in a photo editor. Think your lettering is great, love to see color work and scroll work of this caliber.

When handwriting was taught as a regular thing, the suggestion was to practice with a thin, translucent ink. That way one could see the strokes easily. And compare to whatever exemplar is used. Maybe try a black Zig, especially one that was a bit older and beginning to fade? Or get a Pilot Parallel pen, around 3.8 to 6.0 mm to write large letters for study.

Best of luck,

Yours,
Randal

The human dichotomies of trust and distrust, honor and duplicity, love and hate --- all depend on internal states we cannot directly experience. Isn't this what adds zest to our life?

Thanks for the feedback! I will check in a photo editor next time. :)

I will try again with a black Zig when I can get my hands on one. I don't have any that are fading at the moment, but I saw that they sell them in lighter colors, too, so I'll pick one up the next time I get out to the pen store.

Unfortunately, parallels are hard to come by here, but I have a 3.8mm one on order, so when it gets here, I'll start to practice with that, too.

Thanks again! :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
