Thanks, Fpn - You Saved My Pens!

I had some pens that had been stored away for awhile, that I decided to ink up and use. However, these pens just didn't seem to be working. They were hard to get started and once started would dry up or not write after being capped for a day.

Because I always rinse out my pens and nibs with water before storing them away, I never thought they could be clogged up.

However, I decided to try the Pen Flush consisting of Water, dish soap and ammonia that I had read about here some time ago.

Guess what, it worked, the pens are writing again!

So whoever posted that reciepe, thanks!

I recommend it to anyone having flow problems as a first step,

Erica

Ah, the little miracles that FPN always manages to create. Hopefully you get some more pens and extend your collection!

See Erica, now that you fixed your own pens with FPNs help, you don't have to send them off to a Pro to get them running again.

Applause to you, Erica !

Obviously, the "flushing" habit of yours was not enough to prevent some clogging.

However, it was enough to evade serious clogging. I am glad that the problems

were easy to remedy. You did well. Three cheers.

The ammonia + dishsoap flush works 90% of the time. Glad you found some useful advice here.

I agree with the posters above, now that you've got your pens working, start poking around in the paper and the ink forums just for kicks.

  • 2 weeks later...

So my pen-tweaking has gone to new levels and more pens have been saved. I decided to try nib-smoothing for a couple of cheap pens with scratchy nibs. I got one of my nail-smoothing pads, and using the finest grit, carefully smoothed the nibs. Then I polished them with some mylar sheets I guess I must have had in my drawer for 15 years...

Anyway, it worked, and now they are very nice writers!

I am so thrilled with my adventures that I'm thinking of trying to tweak the nibs of a couple of pens I have that are really too dry ... even after the "flush".

This is fun!

Thanks all for your help over the years.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
