Is This Parker Duofold Worth It?

Hey guys, I recently saw an add on Gumtree. This was the add.

I have never owned a Parker Duofold. Is this pen worth $290?

I live really close to this seller, so shipping would not be an issue.

Is this a good buy?

I have to drop back to the stock reply; things are worth what someone is willing to pay for them. There are so many variables that determine this, and personal preference is an important factor.

It's local.

You like it.

You want it now.

You can go and test it.

If you are prepared to pay this price (which may or may not be 'market value' whatever that means) then it is by definition worth it, IMO.

I can tell you this about my new duofold...

I love mine!! The Duofold was the first "nice" pen I have owned. It did take some time to "break" it in. Meaning it took the user (me) sometime to get used to it.

The price? I cannot say for absolute certainty, but if I remember my research correctly, that is a very good price...assuming it is brand new w/ no shipping.

Good Luck!

I've seen restored versions sell for less on the 'bay. I think Peyton Street Pens also has the Duofold in a few varieties, some for a bit less than that price. I'd suggest shopping around, check out the Classifieds and the Pen_Swap sub on Reddit before plunking down that cash.

Bearing in mind this is an Australian seller and buyer - and that the AUS-US exchange rate would put this price around $US220-230, this is probably a better deal than it looks. I'm not in this part of the market, though, so I can't offer an informed opinion!

For comparison, TheBrimic is selling a Parker Vacumatic on /r/Pen_Swap right now for $130 USD. With exchange rates and shipping, it would still come out to less than this pen.

Sorry to go off topic, but I wanna add my recommendations for Peyton Street Pens. I am thrilled with their service and with that of the Pen Market in Chicago. Both package their items with care and love, but Peyton Street goes one step above and sends you your pen in a nice case.

If you look on Pen Market, you might find a nice, restored vintage Duofold. They've got a nice selection and are very honest about the condition of the items. I give them a thumbs up

As for this Duofold, I would say it's worth it if you can afford it and really want it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
