Thanks for the review. I have a sample of Take-sumi, and while it isn't the blackest ink on the planet, I've noticed that the writing I did with it in my ink journal now looks darker than I remember it being when I did the entry.

The best way I can describe the look of the ink when it goes down on paper is "velvety". I know that sounds weird, but it's almost as if you could put your finger down on the page after the ink is dry and have it feel just like velvet/velveteen was attached to the page. Never had that sort of reaction. It's not shading, per se, and it's not sheen, per se. It's something different -- almost like with those people whose brains are wired to associate numbers with colors or sounds. But I don't have that condition, at least not normally -- but I did with Take-sumi....

Still trying to make up my mind whether it's worth springing for a full bottle, when I don't use black ink much normally....

Take-sumi is certainly one of my favorite blacks, more a very dark charcoal gray than a deep black. Can't really find anything I don't like about it. Noodler's Black Eel is another winner.

I'm looking for an interesting black ink, but can't decide between this ink and Kyonooto #1 Nurebairo.

Anyone has both and can comment?

MY favorite black, an I totally understand and agree with the way inkstained ruth described it.

 

I've found as I've grown older that the highest contrast, deepest blacks are too stark for my aging eyes, and I really appreciate the soft-yet-crisp color/texture quality of Take-sumi.

On Tomoe River paper, Take-Sumi has a lovely black sheen to it. It's quite stunning to see.

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.
