Removing Shroud On Parker 51

Is it a good idea to remove the shroud on a Parjer 51 to give it a good cleaning? If so, how is it done? Does the procedure differ for an aeromatic and a vacumatic? The aero is circa 1950 and the vacu circa 1948.

I think you mean the section. No, do not remove it unless you are a pro. You need heat, section pliers and some sealant, and it can be cracked fairly easily.

The pinned doc was helpful. Thanks.

Is the shroud synonymous with the section on a Parker 51?

I wish I had a dollar [maybe $100 with inflation] for every time I drove through Ocala going from Gainesville to Orlando back in the 1960s.

Icardoth and Bruce,

I assume the same answer to the question of changing a Vac diafragm, right?

Corgi, most usually, the front part is called the hood.

Claudio, I don't understand your question. Sorry.

My local antiques shop has a 51 vac Gold cap at 30CND (about 25 $us) but I assume the diafragm should be changed. I never opened a51 before, so I suppose is a job for a pro, right?

Thanks for the answer

You could always take a couple phone pics and post them back here for us to check out ahead of time.

If the nib is in good shape and the cap isn't dinged or brassed that's a decent price. Does the plunger at least cycle?

FPNer Ernst Bitterman can probably assist you if you have diaphragm issues and he's in Canada. I would not do that

as a first or a beginner repair.

There are probably even odds the diaphragm is good enough for a flush out and ink fill. The issue is when they go, they might

not give any notice = inky mess.

Thanks for the answer Bruce

The plunger works and the nib looks in good condition, although with lots of dry ink. There are some stains in the cap which I couldn't evaluate.

I'll try to get some photos during the weekend.

Don't let the stained cap bother you as long as the staining isn't the brass layer underneath showing.

The Rolled Gold/Filled caps are pretty robust when it comes to polishing.

Dings are the big value minus on gold caps.

If the pen works, you might try using it while you order a diaphragm if you want to replace it. As I remember replacing a few of these a year or so ago, the filler unit unscrews at the bottom of the barrel. First remove the blind cap. I think I used a rubber jar top gripper to grip the filler by the threads and unscrewed it. I replaced the diaphragm and screwed the filler unit back in. Experts here said no shellac or sealant is necessary or even desired on the filler unit threads. It was fairly easy, and the three pens still work fine after a year.

There might well be more involved, but I am pleading oldtimers.

I will add that I hated Vac 51s until I replaced the diaphragms on the three pens. I think I used jaxxon's brass fillers on at least two of them, and had the diaphragms installed by jaxxon. The other one I might have just shellacked the diaphragm to the existing filler unit.

Hi guys,

I took another trip to the antiques shop but I didn't buy the pen.

The cap has significant brassing. It was not just stained, at the bottom of the cap the gold was already gone and the underlying brass was showing. Besides, the cap said "Made in Canada" while the body said "Made in USA", so my guess is that the cap was replaced/exchanged.

So I decided not to buy it, and wait for the next opportunity.

I appreciate a lot all the advice that you gave me (Bruce, Pajaro). Thanks.

See you around guys.

A nib alone is worth the purchase price...

I would be very happy to purchase P51 at that price - but in this corner of the world you never get the chance :(

Feel sorry for you. It is the same here.

But a couple of weeks ago I got the word that a guy in a remote town is celling some vintage pens. When I contacted him I came to know he has more than 50 vintage pens including P51 earos , Parker Vacumatics, Duoflds, P21s, P45s, P75s, P61 (ranbow cap), P65, P15 flighter and a variety of Sheaffers. I had the money so I purchased from him 3 P51 mk1 earos in almost mint condition ( teal blue, black and navy grey), 5 P21s super, 9 P45s (Arrow GT,Flghters GTs with 14k gold nibs and Standards (flghter CTs included ),a P75 Sterling Silver, a P61, a P15 flighter,an English Duofold, 2 Vacumatic Majors, 2 Sheaffer Impeials, a vintage No Nonsens and a Sheaffer Student. All the pens are in great shape and condition. Some are like in brand new condition. I am 100% satisfied with the deal. Forgot to mention I got a spare 51 cap for one of my 51 with mismatched clip on its cap. The celler offered me the cap for free. I have been cleaning the pens for the last ten or so days. Two of the 51s I am already done with.

I am still working on the third 51. The vacs' flilling systems are all in working conditin. I will come to them later. The P21s, 75, 61,the Duofold and P45s just needed thorough cleaning and they are now on the go.

Sometime you just get lucky and the opportunity just presents itself to you. Well, I think that was the case with me.

  • 2 weeks later...

Bruce,

I have a small ultrasonic cleaner, and while both my Aero & Vac P-51s work well, I think it's probably a good idea to clean them thoroughly. You suggest taking the hoodoff but don't give instructions how to do so in that pinned post. Would you please provide instructions on how to do that?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
