Do you recommend buying your fp from a seller from Japan vs a seller in USA?? Specifically inquiring about the Sailor Pro Gear Series....been hearing stories that the quality isn't what it used to be since they are being massed produced

Personally I'd buy a Pilot pen, rather than a Sailor. And I'd buy it from a Japanese seller because of the substantial discount.

These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value.--Thomas Paine, "The American Crisis", 1776

The quality is going to be the same regardless of where you buy except perhaps if you bought one from Mottishaw. These pens have always been mass produced.

I've bought two Sailors from Japan; I got a 1911 Realo and a 1911s. Because of the price difference I was able to buy pens that I would not have been able to afford from US retailers.

The only real downsides are having to return the pen to Japan if there are any problems and not being able to test the pen before purchasing. Personally, I would have never bought the 1911s if I had gotten a chance to hold it first. It is surprisingly small. I don't really hear its size mentioned much; the size difference between the 1911L and 1911S makes a huge impact in my writing comfort.

I believe that all the pertinent arguments are presented above. If you can afford it, buy from a US nibmeister, like John Mottishaw at nibs.com. If money is a significant concern, order it from Japan; it will probably be alright. If not, you have to return it to Japan for repair or replacement.

Personally, I want pens that write well out of the box, so I order from nibs.com if they have the pen I want.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

I would love to be able to afford ordering from US retailors but I can't. Pilot/Platinum/Sailor I've bought at least 1 or 2 of each from Japan and have never got a bad pen.

170$ to buy in USA or 80-90$ buy from Japan. Seems like a no brainer to me... If I was buying a 500$ or higher pen then I would be a little more picky about where I bought it from but for 75-90$ pens I'll take the substantial savings anyday.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
