Xfountainpens Deep Ocean Blue

Both of my Nemosine pens (Singularity and Fission) came with 6 unidentified blue cartridges. I hesitated to use them at first because I'm not used to using lots of cartridges because they are wasteful. However, after reading a post on the forum about Nemosine ink, I decided I had to try one, just in the interest in science. After looking at the XFountainPens website (http://www.xfountainpens.com/collections/ink-cartridges/blue-ink-cartridges), I have confirmed that it is there Deep Ocean Blue. I will be doing a review on this ink, just because. Also, I have a feeling that this ink is made by JinHao, but I do not have any confirmation on it yet. For the index, file this under the XFountainPens for now.

This review will follow my normal standard format for reviews, with pictures following a small blurb. The pictures were taken with an iPhone 6, back camera, in artificial lighting. Effort has been made to show the true color, but your milage may vary depending on your monitor. If you would like to see all my ink images, you are free to go to http://files.goviralforyou.com/Inks/Reviews

Here is a preview of the ink.

For the pen, I used my go-to Nemosine Singularity Demonstrator with a TWSBI B nib. The B nib is a bit thinner than the western B, but nothing major. It's really smooth and awesome.

The review was written on HP 32lb Premium Laser Paper, which can be found at Staples for the whooping price of $19.99, or on Amazon for $15.39. This is my new "standard" paper I will be using for all my reviews, writing, and comparisons. I still have a bit of HP 28lb, which is now discontinued, but I am going to be moving to this one now, as it is much better, IMO.

Here is the swab of the ink. It was made with the back of the nib, as I didn't have my Q-Tips handy.

Considering that the cartridges are no-names, I had pretty bad feels about this ink before actually trying it out. I thought it would be a terrible ink, but I was pleasantly surprised! The ink is actually a pretty nice ink, with decent characteristics. The ink flows quite wet, and provides adequate lubrication, but could be more lubricating. The ink had no feathering, show through, or bleed through, on most of the papers I have tried. There is a tiny bit of shading from light blue, to blue, but can be pretty subtle. Also, the ink is not the most saturated, but still dark enough for writing. There was no dry smear.

The ink takes a bit longer to dry that some other inks, averaging at roughly 20 seconds. However, this isn't a big problem for me as I'm a strong overwriter.

Here is a comparison with other ink colors. Use this as a calibration for your monitors and the photos. I did not intend this to show similar colors.

Here is a poorly drawn ghost to show how the ink looks with sketching, and coloring.

Here is a water test. The top grid had drops of water placed for 10 seconds, then vigorously wiped downwards. The bottom text did not receive any drops of water and was only wiped with in the same motion as the grid. The ink did not fare very well. The grid has lots of ink disappearing, but there was not too much wet smear.

Lastly, here is a scan of the review. Use the scan to read the rest of the review. I did not intend for it to show color accuracy. The pictures are the most accurate representation of the color.

That's all folks! I would give this ink a 7/10. If you liked this review, stay tuned for more to come!

That's a pretty blue. I think I have a couple of these around and never tried them.

Very helpful. Thank you for doing this detailed and comparative review of what heretofore was Nemosine's mystery blue.

I'm glad I tried this ink! It's actually quite nice! Now only if I can get a hold of the black ones!!

The blue is very pretty.

The black is very smooth.

Interesting that there is such mystery about who is the nanufacturer.

Be Happy, work at it. Namaste

Follow-up. I had sent an inquiry to Nemosine and just received this response: "Unfortunately, we don't have Nemosine ink available as a standalone item as of now, but we will in the very near future!"

That really doesn't answer the question of "Who makes the ink?"

Maybe I can call them next week and talk to someone?

I've emailed Nemosine as well, and they told me they don't sell the ink and didn't provide any other information. Goldspot said they have no idea who makes the ink, either. I adore the black, it writes like silk in my Singularity EF.

If you are still looking for a black cartridge, I can snail mail you one. (If I can force myself to part with one of my preciouses :) )

If you really like 'em, just keep 'em for yourself! I don't have much use of the black, and just wanted to do a chemical comparison with the Jinhao Black to see if they were a match.

Nice review, thanks for sharing. It does indeed resemble the blue Jinhao cartridges I have.

A point against them being Jinhao cartridges is that the box says "made in Slovenia". I ordered the 40 pack some time ago and they came in this box. Of all the cartridge ink I've tried it's the nicest. I haven't tried diamine or PR or other high-priced cartridges since I have that ink in bottles already.

The Jinhao I have are longer cartridges with a longer bit on the end.

Like so:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
