Montblanc Limiting The Nib Options

I remember reading somewhere that both pelikan and Montblanc were going to start reducing their nib ranges?

Could someone please tell me if this is true or.not and what nibs will be left availible?

Thanks!

I remember reading somewhere that....

nibs that will be gone
OB, BB, BBB, OBB, OBBB if you use these nibs GET THEM NOW!

I suppose the timing of this makes sense, with the switch to the new modular nib/feed units. But where is this information coming from?

This, if it's in fact true, it would be both surprising and not unexpected. It's surprising because it deals a real blow to those who actually esteem fountain pens as expressions of the beauty of the hand-written word and who also find the joy inherent in writing. It's simultaneously expected because MB probably isn't making much money from unusual nib widths and most of their current customers are seemingly more preoccupied with having MB pens as status totems then they are with writing.

Yesterday I'v visited the boutique here in Rio.

The beautiful girl told me MB will limit the full nib portfolio only for the 149. In 2015 the 146 will still have some options. According to her, in 2016 only the 149's nibs will be available.

She also gave me a book with 2014/2015 Collections. Did you know about this?

Pelikan already completed its specialty nibs discontinuation a year or two ago; they discontinued all of the nibs in the post above. Perhaps Montblanc, seeing their closest German rival discontinue all of their specialty nibs, has decided to follow suit? It might make sense, seeing as they no longer have any competitors anymore in specialty nibs.

But all of this is speculation and rumor. I don't think anyone here has cited a source, except for fravin, and I'd be interested to know the extent and schedule of the discontinuation.

I agree totally with the above.

Decline and Fall

So true. And really awful timing with this too. Now I have to hurry to get a 149 BB much sooner than I expected.

either way I dont see the practicality of using BBB nibs for everyday writing... it's like saying you doing diary entry with a Pilot 6MM parallel AT FULL WIDTH

Depends on "everyday writing".

Notes to colleagues with OBB, BBB, 1.3 or 1.5 stub/italic, maybe even in Baystate Blue or some radiant red are definitely not easily overlooked :-)

Greetings,

Michael

I am trying not to panic.

I only own one OBB in a 146. Some time this year, I intend acquire a 149 with an oblique nib.

I am getting a little panicky.

It would be good to cross reference this thread to some official communication from MB if anyone can provide a link?

And yet many of us who do wonder how the needle nib contingent manages to scribble with those tiny points...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
