Eight Ball Raised Ring With No Sleeve?

PhilProf

Recommended Posts

I've just acquired an eight ball desk set with a raised ring on the base. All the others I have are models with flat engraved rings; on each of these the ring surrounds a black plastic sleeve which cradles the pen. My 'new' raised ring model has no plastic sleeve. Is it missing the sleeve or is there not supposed to be one?

Thanks for your help.

I don't have one at present, but if memory serves, the "8-ball" does require a sleeve under the ring, removable for cleaning.

Best Regards

If your raised ring look like these on this two pen base then, unless I'm mistaken, you should already have a sleeve in there. I just checked my base and it looks like each sleeve and ring is one piece of molded plastic. Being one piece of plastic the sleeve is the same color (silver) as the ring, not black like the later "8-ball" bases.

Thanks NobleDel. Your picture is helpful--nice set! The raised ring on my '8-ball' isn't as pronounced as yours, but like yours it doesn't look like a sleeve could fit within the ring and extend all the way to the top. So I'll not discount the possibility that it's there, under the ring as Hobiwan suggested. now that I know to look inside and under I'll have at it with a pen light later today.

OK. I was unable to remove the ring with the amount of force I was prepared to use, but based on the suggestions that there should be a sleeve below and under the metal ring I set to work cleaning. After removing however many decades of black and blue ink I finally hit 'bottom'. Beneath the crud there's an inner plastic sleeve over and into which the metal ring / lip fits.

Thanks for the advice.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
