"cheap" Waterman Or Other European Fps

Erica Kline

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have been fascinated by the inexpensive fountain pens that European schoolkids use, such as certain Waterman models that used to exist and so forth.

I used to see them on the Waterman website, but they're not there anymore.

You can sometimes see them on French stationery sites and so forth...

Does anyone ever buy and use those pens? Do you have a source, preferably in English and shipping to the USA?

Thanks,

Erica

The usual sites: amazon, ebay, fpn classifieds.

Or go to Europe. What better reason than to buy pens at department stores and corner shops?!

LOL, I would love to go to Europe! Doesn't look like it's happening soon.

I've bought pens off Ebay UK before, so I guess I'll try there. It's just strange that nobody on FPN seems to be interested in these pens. Maybe not nice enough writers...

Pilot has several inexpensive pens that can be found at office depot or target or through jetpens.

Buying and shipping a Waterman starter pen for $30-50-or more, competes with Kaweco sport, Lamy safari, Platinum balance/cool...

I like my Waterman kultur, and I write pages, daily. I might buy another at $30. But at $50, I'd buy a different pen. Probably a Platinum cool. I like writing/drawing with a bit of flex and wouldn't mind that in an edc pen, too.

Hi cattar,

You have a good point, it seems like there are more and more interesting looking Platinum and Pilot pens available these days. I notice they come in a range of colors too, which intrigues me. I love purple fountain pens.

I have a Kultur, it's sparkly purple, and I also have a Waterman Harley Davidson "Phileas". Used to have a blue Phileas but I lost it.

I am looking on the UK Ebay site to see what they have...

Uh-oh Erica, pen collecting.

I have the reflectis rmarron. I am tempted to get all the kultur colors since I use several colors in inks. Then I wouldn't have to think about what black pen has what color.

I haven't tried the phileas. I like the superlight kultur.
Good luck.

I've gotten my examples of the cheap Watermans (Jiffie, Graduate, something else no one is sure of the name of) from eBay, frequently from French sellers. SOME of those sellers don't try to wring foolish prices out of you because Waterman is a name seen on the side of expensive pens, too.

Hi Ernest,

Are you from the French-speaking part of Canada or does Ebay France have english translation?

My ancestors were Saintonges but the french-speaking gene didn't get passed on to me...

LOL I have already been bitten by the pen collecting bug, actually have lots already, but always looking for the next great thing...

Putting ink in pens of a similar color is a plan I have done in the past... it's a good idea.

There is a french seller on FPN, whatever you`re looking for, he probably has it or knows where to get it from. Look for Damien :)

Je ne parle pas except to read the other side of a cereal box. There's postings in English, there's pictures to rely upon (since many listings just say RARE UNIGQUE COOL WATERMAN INK PEN!!!1! anyway), and when pressed I turn to Google to make sense of the foreign language bits. I don't look at eBay France as much as make sure that the "Worldwide" selection in activated in the variables down the left side of the search panel.

I have used a couple of the less expensive Waterman pens. I think you are better to bottom out on the Kultur. The Phileas is great also. With an 18K nib from a L'etalon the Phileas can be a really great pen.

On European Ebay I"ve seen Phileas' listed for new Hemisphere or Expert kind of money.

I guess sellers hoping to catch out some buyers as the name and the look of the pen make it seen more expensive than it is/was

I had a Phileas and lost it, it's on my to-do list to replace it one of these days. It was my third ever fountain pen so had a lot of sentimental value.

Try a Lamy fountain pen. It is a German brand and the cartridge/converter pens are affordable. Look for Lamy Safari or Al-star. The Safari costs less than 20 EURO and is a suberb pen. Just be aware that Lamy pens do not use international cartidges. You might want to order a converter.

Montgomery -> Waterman -> rare pens

The price is around Pilot Metro but I'm not sure the quality of this type of fp.

Pelikano is also around this price range too, or the popular Safari from Lamy.

I don't know, he's selling Philieas for $190... that's outrageous.

Hey User01, I love Lamy Safari, already have a purple Al Star, planning to get pink and green too.

I also have some other "cheap" pens: Platinum Preppy, Shaeffer school pens, a plastic Rotring pen...

I am looking for pens that either look classier than their price (hard to define, I know) or have an interesting design like the Waterman Audace.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
