Parker 51 Special - Now My Favorite Pen

Hi Guys

Just wanted to share with you all a wee story about how my Parker 51 Special became my favorite pen today. It has always been in my top 3 pens. I brought my 51 off ebay and got it cheap because the hood did not line up with the nib. Now instead of cleaning it and straightening the hood i just carried on using the pen because it had been used that way for a long time now by the previous owner. Today i decided to try align the hood and the nib and got a bit of a supprise when i removed the hood (See Picture Below ...) YES WHAT YOU SEE IS CORRECT somone has put the nib on the feed wrong and naturally nothing lined up. All has been fixed now, the pen has been cleaned and the nib put on the correct side of the feed. Yet even with the nib on the feed wrong the pen still wrote beuatifly. Thats why the 51 is now my Favorite.

Thanks for reading.

Are you sure? ;)

Which ink channel in the collector did you line the nib center up with, the narrow channel or the wide one.

I'm not certain what you are saying about the alignment but your collector needs some serious cleaning.

So I took another look at the pen and I am wrong, it must just have been the hood in a funny position. Taking off the hood causes the nib to turn. if your looking at the picture I have spun the nib around so you would be looking at the top of the nib. The nib lines up nicely with the underside of the feed. I was watching a YouTube clip the showed me how to take off the hood and nib.

I suppose the real reason this pen is awsome is that any idiot/novice can pull it apart clean it put it back together and it still writes just as nice!

Yeah as fare as I'm aware the previous owner never flushed the pen since they brought it new. They just put it in a draw and left it for months at a time. Edited by brendonsie

No one is talking about the previous owner. The pen is now your property. So please clean the collector of your pen. Or, rather the entire pen might need thorough cleaning.

Warm water with a couple of drops of dish detergent is your friend. If you have an ultrasound unit, even better. If you like the way it writes with that clogged feed, you'll absolutely love it when it's cleaned up. Welcome aboard!

Best,

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
