Private Reserve Spearmint

I picked up this bottle a very very very long time ago and never bothered to make a review of it! I am extremely backlogged on reviews, so I have finally gotten to posting this one!

The review will follow my normal system of reviews, where pictures follow a short blurb. The pictures were taken with an iPhone 6, back camera, in artificial lighting. No color editing has been made.

Here is a preview of the ink. It is a saturated green ink, leaning a little bit towards the yellow side.

The review was written with a Kaigelu 316 pen with a very wet M nib. The M nib is a bit soft, and has a teeny tiny bit of flex if you try hard enough.

The review was written on my standard HP 28lb copy paper, which has now been discontinued. It is comparable with the still-available, HP 32lb laser paper, which is also very nice.

Here is a swab of the ink, made by rubbing the back of the nib onto the paper. I did not have my Q-tips with me sadly.

The ink has very nice characteristics, with this nib. The ink flows quite well, but not to a point of gushing out. Also, it provides a fair amount of lubrication. There is some shading present, but it is not too pronounced. As well, I did not notice much feathering on this paper. There is some show through, and noticeable amounts of bleed, on the wet parts. However, the back of the paper is still very usable. The ink is very saturated, and dark. No dry smear present. http://files.goviralforyou.com/Inks/Reviews/Private%20Reserve/Spearmint/Characteristics.jpeg

The ink dries fairly quickly, at roughly the 9 second mark, give or take 1 second.

Here is a comparison to other ink colors. Use this as a way of calibrating your monitor and the photos. I did not intend these to show similar ink colors.

Here is a water test. The top grid had drops of water placed for 10 seconds, then vigorously wiped downwards. The bottom text did not receive any drops of water and was only wiped with in the same motion as the grid. The ink fared quite averagely in this test. There was noticeable lifting of the ink in the grid, and a decent amount of wet smear.

Here is a poorly drawn ghost to show what the ink would look like in sketching/drawing.

Lastly, here is a scan of the review. Use the scan to read the rest of the review. I did not intend for it to show color accuracy. The pictures are the most accurate representation of the color.

That's all folks! I would give this ink a 8/10. If you liked this review, stay tuned for more to come!

Very nice review; thank you for sharing.

I do have this ink and fully agree with your results. The colour is a pretty bright and 'live' one.

Thanks for the review. It is an absolutely beautiful ink, and I just discovered it myself thanks to a GouletPens sample. I just love the shading. The color really looks like fresh spearmint. You might try doing your reviews on quality fountain pen paper, like Rhodia, as you are going to get that feathering, bleadthrough and so on from almost all fountain inks on cheap copy paper. I'm glad you found this ink, as it is really great.

This review was a little old and I did get myself some nice paper between then and now. I now use the HP 32lb Premium Laser which is much nicer, and almost Rhodia quality. I love that I can print my own rulings and lines with it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
