Lacquer On Pens?

I have a good feeling this doesn't belong here, but I can't find a better section.

I'm wondering if I had urushi lacquer and put it on the plastic pen body and added some gold flakes from (gold foil) can I make that is something like those makie art? Sort of like poor man's makie. I do know I need learn first.

I know ebay sells small tubes of them. Or should I go for something else that is cheaper. I might end up buying cheap pens from china and use them as my test bed and end up giving those away after a fail or a win till I mastered it.

I know I need to convert a cardboard box into a drying box. And I need a gas mask + Facesheild + thick gloves.

It is a good place for this question, as it comes under the heading of 'Making'.

There was a thread on Urushi, but I've lost track of it.

Richard

I have purchased from Mejiro Co. and was quite satisfied with their service and product.

Joe B.

I was just about to ask about them now. Lol. Well I mean their ebay shop.

I saw they sell a kit. Do you know if that kit it worth it?

Also does anybody know any other lacquer that is Urushi-like and yet is much cheaper. I just thought of the price, and practice alone will rack up possibly 100 USD. Unless I decide to sell my practice pens, but still who wants to even buy a pen that a person just practiced on?

I just thought of it and noticed this might be up there for one of the most expensive hobbies.

  • 2 weeks later...

actually dont practice study under a professional handling Urushi isnt a joke

Huh?

Can you reword that I don't understand that.

I know Urushi is pretty deadly. I have a 3M face shield and 3M P100 mask I also have latex gloves (it's a latex substitute that should be more neutral) I also have a Tyvek suit.

Although I do have MSA gas mask I do still have some filters and I hate using that as it seems to choke me as breathing in is very hard with the NBC protection filters.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
