Anyone Been To The Santa Fe (Nm) Pen Fair?

I'm just wondering if anyone's been to the Santa Fe Pen Fair? If so, would you recommend it? I'm considering going, but I know that I'll be super busy during that time and not sure if I should make room to attend.

I live in Albuquerque and I have gone every year. It is very small, with just a few tables with vendors. If you are looking for a particular pen, one of the things I have found lately is that some of the vendors seem to have old stock and not the latest and greatest from pen companies.

If you have time it is worth going though, just for the eye candy.

Just don't expect anything like the big pen shows around the country.

It's a smaller show, to be sure, but if you live in SF, it's worth making a stop.

Mostly newer pens are for sale, although Neil Frank's store, Santa Fe Pens, has a good assortment of vintage pens as well. I will typically stop in for a little bit to see if anything catches my eye. Friends have purchased a number of pens at the show, and been well pleased.

As well, the bookstore Op Cit is in Sanbusco Centre, which is always worth a quick walkthrough.

If you've not attended, I'd recommend seeing it.

Hmm. I guess I'll have to make a point of stopping by! I'm a fan of Op Cit Books actually. They're probably my favourite bookstore in Santa Fe next to the one at St. John's College!

There's another fine bookstore in walking distance from Sanbusco, Books of Interest, on Aztec between Guadalupe and Sandoval. The store has parking behind the building, so it's not another of the "move, pay, move, pay" parking idiocies of SF, but it's also about five minutes easy walk from Sambusco. Highly recommended. Combined with the Santa Fe Pen Show - which I can't visit this year because of a business trip, alas - it's a good mix of books and pens.

I need to get over to Saint John's College bookstore one of these days myself... Great location, and likely the best selection of classics in the state.

Since we moved to Colorado over 30 years ago, my wife and I try to get down to Santa Fe once or twice a year to see friends and relatives and to get our chile fix :). Since I got into pens about ten years ago and discovered that Neal's was the second closest b&m pen shop to my house, I usually swing by when I'm in town. I've been trying to coordinate the timing of our spring visit with Neal's extravaganza over the past several years. Last year I was able to score a Faber-Castell Ondoro in orange at a very good price.

I'm planning to visit this year if our goats are through kidding by then.

It's a good opportunity to see some stock in person that you won't see unless you visit a major store or a big show. If I was as close as Albuquerque, I'd make it every year for sure!

The NMPCC has their meeting in Albuquerque the following weekend - that's a good bunch of folks to hang with, too.

And if you find yourself looking for a pen fix in the fall, we'll be putting on our Colorado Pen Show in Denver on Columbus Day weekend.

The more I know about computers, the more I like my pens.

  • 3 weeks later...

The first day was today. Runs tomorrow as well, from noon (I think) to closing. Lots of pretty pens, friendly dealers. The special edition pen looks a lot nicer in person than in the ad. But Number 27 is gone.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
