Pelikan Souveran M800 - Bought From Amazon Eu S.a.r.l.

Dear all,

I have just received my new Pelikan Souveran M800, Black & Green which I ordered via Amazon.de.

My excitement and antcipation was crushed when I saw how this fine writing piece was delivered. I made a picture of te package that arrived with my

mobile phone, but I cannot upload it because it's size is 2,24 MB, whereas the maximum allowable size of upload files is 1,95MB :(

No documentation, no box, nothing except the bare pen fell into my mail box. Can any of you who own such a pen give me some

feedback? I cannot imagine that this is normal... Should I be worried about the authenticity of this product?

I look forward to your feedback.

RSEN

That is not an acceptable to ship any pen, new or not. Was the seller Amazon.de or third party? I am guessing a third party.

Hello rsen, what do you mean by "no box"? Do you mean that it came in a small cardboard box? Because if so, I wouldn't worry, because the pen companies have been doing this for a while. Having said that, both of my Pelikans arrived with presentation box and papers, so I think it is a bit of a gamble as to what you get.

I bought the pen from AMAZON.de (Amazon EU S.a.r.L), the product was advertised as being New, the price was 307 EUR...

The Nib is engraved with "18C -750" and below this "M"

Does one usually get documentation, box etc. when buying a Pelikan Souveran from an offial retailer?

rsen, you should check out the links in my previous reply. But to summarize, it is a bit of a gamble. My Pelikans came with presentation box and documentation. However, other people have only gotten a Pelikan in a cardboard tube with no documentation (see my links for a photo). This is, although not desirable, how these pen companies are doing things to cut costs. See my second link for martinauction's, a Pelikan dealer, perspective on this for some more insight.

I had more or less a similar experience with an M400 and I remember posts on this forum from Regina Martini, who is a well trusted seller of Pelikan pens in Germany (and also an official dealer I think), explaining that Pelikan never delivers their regular models in a presentation box. Such boxes are available but sellers, even if it is an official Pelikan dealer, have to buy them from Pelikan as additional items to the pen. So the fact that your pen is delivered without a box and without documentation is not really unusual.

I did not find the exact thread but check this one out for a start:

By "no box" I mean that the pen was held in a paper box which was put into the usual amazon-carton-envelope...

I am now considering whether I should return the pen because without Pelikan documentation, warranty, .. I don't know

what to think..

If you had bought it from a reputable pen shop/dealer, I would say don't worry - If something went wrong with the pen, they would most likely honor the warranty. But, buying directly from Amazon, I would be prone to return it for a refund. You can get a similar price from a shop/dealer in Germany. I deal with Rolf at missing-pen. I have purchased about 10 pens from him (including 3 M800's), and, any time I have had a problem, he has (fairly) taken care of it. ( I'm sure there are many other reputable dealers in Germany.)

Hopefully the pen did not arrive damaged as a result of the packaging. A lot of these "cheaper" deals are found without presentation packaging in order to cut cost. Many pens come in simple cardboard sleeves without papers. If the pen is in the expected condition and you have a receipt from an authorized retailer, I would not be concerned and would keep the pen. If they are not an authorized retailer, I would be concerned with regards to any future warranty claims.

As long as the pen didn't arrive damaged, just use it and enjoy it. Did you buy it for the presentation box, or to write with?

You'll notice that Pelikan forums aren't littered with posts about leaking/cracked/broken M800's, or "what was your experience with the Pelikan service center". There might be a reason for that... ;)

Yes, one would normally get documentation if you buy from a B&M or from a reputable online seller.

Having said that, if you bought it directly from Amazon, then you do have a guarantee through the sale (and can print out a copy of the sale record via your account - that would be sufficient, though it is annoying that they don't send the paperwork). So I really wouldn't worry about the lack of paperwork sent through the post. As long as there is no problem with the pen (cracked because of manhandling in the post), you should be fine.

I guess you received only a part of the "due" package.

Pelikan sends pens to dealers in separate way.

On the one hand the empty boxes (each with its warranty, booklet, and so on), and on the other hand the pens alone, each one in a small green carboard box that can contain only one pen, with its ref. code.

If the dealer gives the shipment work to subcontractors, this is what may happen. They probably shipped only one piece (the pen), because there was the code labelled outside.
I'm afraid that your proper boxes (and warranties, and booklets) are lying somewhere in the total carelessness of the wharehouse staff.

"All Souveran pens are supplied in a gift box and come with an international three year guarantee"

I just copied this line from the description of a M400 in Amazon UK, but some buyers complained that they actually received the pen without the box, so I think it is a common practice even when explicit mention of the gift box comes in the description.

"Item weight" and "shipping weight" information could/should also be meaningful at this respect: if shipping weight is 18g, for example, I am inclined to think that the pen comes without gift box (unless the description says it comes with it, of course). If it is instead 358g, as it is the case of a M800 I have just seen now also in Amazon, I would be expecting a more weighty box instead.

As several sellers usually offer the same product, I would also say that some of them sell the pen with the gift box and some of them without. It can be a good idea to contact the seller before the purchase.

In Amazon, Pelikan is not the only brand where this kind of situation is common. Unfortunately I had the same problem with a Lamy Studio years ago.

Amazon customer service is excellent, in my opinion. They usually resolve this kind of issues in a satisfactory way when the customer is not satisfied with the purchase.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
