Twsbi Nib Alternatives (First Post, Please Be Gentle!)

I've been bitten by the fountain pen bug.

It started when I lost my parker Jotter, and bought a Parker IM to replace it, and then continued to search for that perfect pen with the perfect feel.

During my journey into the world of pens, I became convinced that if I find the right pen (Pelikan or TWSBI), the right paper (Rhodia or Ampad Gold Fiber), the right ink (J. Herbin Lierre Sauvage or Waterman Green), and right nib (still unknown), I'll become proficient in any foreign language I intend to study, maybe I'll even become a famous author....therefore I have a vested interest in finding the right answer to the following question:

What nibs can I use on a TWSBI 580?

I've noticed some people used nibs from Pelikan but there are no confirmed reports on the 580. I am not qualified to say whether I prefer gold nibs or not, but it'll be nice to know if TWSBI allows me to have options. The whole reason I like this pen is because it reminds me of a Honda CRX in "swappability".

"But it is the same with humanity as with the tree. The more he seeks to rise into the height and light, the more vigorously do his roots struggle earthward, downward, into the dark and deep – into the evil." - Nietzsche, Friedrich Wilhelm. Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

The right nib on a TWSBI will make you irresistible to the opposite sex, bringing you

fame, fortune, wealth, keys to the kingdom, true love, answers to the meaning of life,

and a good-writing TWSBI.

Travel long and hard toward the far destination. You may or may not reach King

Solomon's Mines, or Shangrila or Eden. The treasure lies in the going.

I'm not sure what's wrong with the nib in your 580, but mine's great. So I guess if you find one better, it will be real good.

This was ineed part of my agenda but modesty demanded that I speak not of it.

Nothing is wrong yet, I don't even have the pen. Still waiting for it at a local store.

This doesn't directly answer your question, but see this post: List of possible nib substitutions.

I was actually inspired by the 530/540 <-> Pelikan thread, which is why I made an account to get some clarification. Was wondering if it applies to 580 too.

Along my TWSBI journey, I discovered the perfect symmetry of having a nib tuned or ground to my writing style. Big goofy grin as I sit in Shangrila.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

what nib you say just for curiousity sake Pilot number 5 nibs FIT its TIGHT BUT IT WORKS I wouldnt say bother removing it after the transplant because it's a pain to get it out wet heat works though are there number 5 nibs from Pilot available Custom 74 is readily available in the US no? that will do but you want soft nibs well... go get the Heritage 91 then... I won't say it's a justified pen purchase but Heritage 91 has semi-flex nibs with silver trim that works with the silver trim with the TWSBI pens except the rose gold finish

Unless you enjoy the chase for the perfect nib (queue the Indiana Jones theme music here), I would concur with Amber that sending the pen to a nibmeister would ultimately be quicker (depending on who you select) and probably cheaper. I have stubs or italics from 3 different nibmeisters and really think if I had started sending pens to have the nibs professionally ground, I would have accumulated far less pens.

I had a store credit that was due to expire, so I treated myself to a small Visconti Dreamtouch 23k Pd nib with a view to installing it onto my TWSBI Diamond 580. The size of the nib and shape into the section were perfect. My first attempt was way too wet, caused by a rather large gap between nib and feed (TWSBI nibs curve down toward the page, but the Visconti nib projects straight out). A bit of effort to heat-set the feed... et voila! A TWSconti Dreamtouch 580.

The pen is now much smoother than it was OOTB, and the new nib has a lovely springy feel to it.

Excuse the picture, I'm neither photographer nor calligrapher.

There is something wonderful about a pen that writes well for you.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
