Introducing the Zayante -- The latest from PSP, handmade by Ranga of India

The Zayante is the newest model in our ongoing collaboration with Ranga pens of India. This model, designed by the folks here at PSP, features the same solid, handmade workmanship and sturdy ebonite and acrylic materials as our other Ranga models, but with a few subtle design changes.

The Zayante has a semi-overlapping cap, allowing a minimal step-down from barrel to section. When compared to our other Ranga oversized models, the gripping area is a little more slender (11mm) and the pen is stout and slightly shorter at 5-1/2". We're currently configuring the pen with the popular JoWo screw-in nib assemblies, and so the pen is available in nib sizes from XF to 1.5mm.

Available in the standard Ranga ebonite colors, as well as smooth black and matte black. The blue on left is a premium ebonite pen.

Above is one of the standard ebonite pens, green ripple, priced at $80.

This is another one of the premium ebonite pens, priced at $100.

We have a few in acrylic, priced at $80.

We install and fine tune the nibs here in California before shipping. These high quality German JoWo nibs have been very popular with our customers, especially the fat 1.1mm and 1.5mm stubs. We've not had a single customer return a pen due to a JoWo nib issue, and we use them daily ourselves, so we can highly recommend them for smoothness and dependable performance. As with all our pens, we fully guarantee the Zayante. We have these in limited quantities, especially the acrylics, but we will begin rolling out new colors in the coming weeks.

We've also started experimenting with using other nibs and the JoWo feed/housing set up .... stay tuned!

Thanks for your interest in our pens ....

Definitely interested in one of these; I don't have much experience with Jowo nibs though. I hope the XF is comparable to a japanese fine. If not, then I'm going for the stub! Cant lose either way. What's the difference between the premium ebonite and the regular ebonite?

Thanks for for the feedback.

Premium ebonite colors are brighter and flashier ... they have less/none of the black hard rubber mixed in.

As for the nib size, you are correct in thinking the XF is like a Japanese fine. It's the best width for me personally when it comes to everyday writing. It is not like a vintage XF.

Nice looking pens and they bring back fond memories of when I used to live in the area. The club zayante in particular was quite a lively place before it closed many years ago. I really like the look of the premium blue and orange ebonite.

We've re-ordered the premium orange pens and should have them in the coming weeks. I'll post a photo of the pen posted later this week.

Here's a comparison showing the various Ranga models ...

So. . . am I judging the picture properly? Is the Zayante about the same length as the Ranga 3, but just a bit "chunkier?"

If so, then I'll be watching color availability as stock arrives.

I love the look of the black cracked ice acrylic.

Sharp eyes, Steve! We actually had to re-do the comparison photo because the proportions weren't right. If you re-load the page you'll see the new graphic. The Zayante is shorter than the regular oversize 3 and 4C Rangas, but the same thickness.

We did some measurements -- Cap at its widest is 16mm, barrel at its widest is 14.2mm. Of course these are hand made, so the mm's can vary a bit.

This one is a total custom/experiment job, but it will show what it looks like posted.

Not the standard set-up, this one has yellow racing stripes and with a Sheaffer Feather Touch nib on the JoWo assembly.

That green acrylic Zayante is beautiful and I have three pens with various JoWo nibs and they are all great writers, very smooth.

I was sold on it as soon as I saw. Terri sent

me some measurements about a week ago

and I placed an order yesterday for the

red and black ebonite. I also like the fact

that you can just order the pen as I have

some very nice JoWo nibs to put into it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
