Addiction To Chinese Pens

Recommended Posts

I think I have a problem, just bought 8 Chinese pens on eBay.

Honestly, I bought a few Hero 616 Doctor pens and while they are OK, I was hoping for metal barrels. The 616 is unbalanced when posted, thought it works just fine. I went on eBay in search of metal barrel pens and right now have a Jinhao 1000, Baoer 517, Jinhao 188, Jinhao 15 and a Jinhao 950 Dragon on the way. I also have 5 more I placed bids on. I cannot find a lot of information regarding these pens online (that have been reviewed) so it will be an adventure to see what comes in the mail.

I have three Baoer 517s on the way to keep in my backpack at school as giveaway pens for people who see me using my pens and are interested in trying. $8.40 shipped for all three. There are a couple of reviews of the 517 here on FPN...probably the others, too.

I'm starting to get addicted too! So far, I've bought a Baoer 388 (which I'm still waiting on from China...) and a Jinhao 450.

Both are gifts to friends who are interested in trying out fountain pens, but so far their only experience have been with Preppys.

Sorry, my wife is not ethnically sensitive, and she reads over my shoulder.

I really love my X750s, however, each one of them has a Goulet 1.1 stub and write very smooth. Often I reach for the X750s when working on the commmentary I am currently writing. My 599s get a good workout during classroom time (classes restart 2nite). Recently purchased a 3000 and was rather surprised at how well it writes. I do have some nicer pens in my small collection, yet, when it comes to the ,day-to-day routine activities the X750 takes care of those needs!

How can you not love the sheer variety and inventiveness--especially when many of the pens are really good writers?

Jinhao 159, x250, x450, x500, 599, Hero 266, and Hero 616. $20 worth of pens. Variety ? Yes.

Inventiveness ? No. Fun in using and fun in sharing ? Yes.

Me too, I just can't help myself.

I just got 2 Jinhao 599s in on Saturday and ordered a Kaigelu 316 and another 368 today.

It's a disease I tells ya, a disease.

  • 3 weeks later...

You are in good company here!

I think I have bought app. 50 Chinese pens. Some 20 were given away to make converts, 10 (counterfeit 616's) went directly in the dust bin, a handful I screwed up learning to adjust and smooth nibs, 3 or 4 were nicked by my girlfriend, but that still leaves me with a dozen nice and cheap writers.

Addictive? Yes...but not a big problem I'd say. It is cheap, fun and it keeps me off the street :P

I've done almost the same, except it was 6 pens.

I've ordered the following;

  • Jinhao x450 - Black - M
  • Jinhao x450 - White - M
  • Baoer 388 - Stainless Steel - M
  • Baoer 388 - Black - M
  • Baoer 801 - Black - F
  • Baoer 801 - Stainless Steel - F

The Jinhao x450 Black arrived today and so far I love it. I'd prefer if it wasn't such a task to cap and uncap(It's on very tight), but other than that, I really can't complain for the price I paid. It write fantastically. It arrived after 8 days (China --> UK) so it came a lot quicker than expected. Who knows what the postman will bring tomorrow!

I'm really looking forward to trying the fine nibs and I think that'll suit my writing style better.

I am thinking about adding another 750 as a backup. Already have an inverted nib Jinhao also. Put a 1.9 Goulet stub on the 750. Will order 450s soon. Love the 750 weight and girth.

I think the 750 will be my next purchase as well. Lava Red looks fantastic.

My addiction is not helped now that I am working in China....

Or...Is helped. :D

As you'll be able to get them even cheaper than the rest of us.

You'll still be spending a fortune...of course, but the upside is that you'll be spending less of a fortune than we will.

Will any of us stop buying?

NOT A CHANCE.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
