Pay no attention to the middle book on the top shelf that is next to the green bungbox ink.

Whoa. That is beautiful. Truly. I am in awe!

What is that interesting little bottle next to the nostalgic impressions apothecary ink bottle?

That bottle isn't actually the NI bottle, that's a bottle from Marshall's and it is HUGE. The NI bottle is 1/3 the size. The bottle next to it is 1920s crystal perfume bottle filled with Penman Ruby.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I thought the bottle looked too big, lol!

I was suspecting that the little pretty one might be a perfume bottle. How does the cap do in keeping the ink from evaporating? Does it provide a good seal? Many times I have thought of buying a pretty bottle just to keep a special ink in, but I am concerned with the lid not having a decent seal.

I agree, that's why I started using my inks, giving away samples, sharing the pages. I don't want to just collect, I want to use and enjoy.

Love is over-rated - with regard to both people and things.

Either an ink has a purpose, or it doesn't. Some ink might work better for some purposes than other ink. Some inks may be preferred over others.

You're nobody till somebody loves you...

You're nobody till somebody cares...

You may be king, you may possess

the world and its gold.

But gold won't bring you happiness

when you're growing old.

The world still is the same, it never changes

as sure as the stars shine above....

Well you're nobody till somebody loves you...

So find yourself somebody to love!

I am promiscuous. However, no matter how hard I play with the inks, I keep on coming back to Akkerman Shocking Blue. It shades, it has a hell of a sheen, silky smooth, dignified but playful (like a Dutchman), and comes in a dandy bottle.

+1 on that.

I used to think the same thing: love is overrated, tailor made for hollywood movies etc.

But then my wife and I had a baby and I realized what real love is.

I've gone most of my life hating colored inks, but I may be mellowing. I bought one of those 30 ml bottles of Iroshizuku Yama-guri (wild chestnut) and it's fabulous! It looks like aged medieval ink, which appeals tremendously to the history nerd in me. I've put it in about half my pens...I may have to invest in a bigger bottle.

Has anyone else had this sort of conversion experience?

Yes, I agree. Formally, my love was for fountain pens primarily. I purchased red inks, different hues of red inks, but not with a sort of delirious love for them, just love red; finding red not to be a one stop color for me to explore, became interested in the different hues of red, blueish-red my all time favorite.

However, recently returned to my wonderful love of fountain pens and have found I love inks. Currently, the Iroshizuku brand of inks as you also find. I have also had the same conversion. My favorites so far? Momiji and Tsutsuji, still in the red family. I love seeing the ink before and during my writing. Don't think I have mellowed as much as I have acquired a taste for the accoutrements associated with enjoying fountain pens. At least, it is what I am claming! No one needs to know the rest. Also, I can afford samples of ink in the 2ml vials. Like you, if finding I love a particular ink, then can purchase 15ml of the Iroshizuku ink and be just as if I am on :cloud9:

Love is a term that is way too widely applied to just about everything. Maybe it's because of what I do for a living, or, maybe I'm just highly cynical to begin with. When I look at things, the "L" word doesn't really have room. There is either functionality or there isn't. Attaching too much emotional involvement to anything, living or inanimate, creates a scenario where it is impossible to objectively analyze the situation.

Does the ink meet a need, and is it suitable for the task? (this week saw some *bad* ink used for old records) Does it avoid looking like the pastel Easter Bunny vomited onto the page? At that point, the ink makes its way on to my acceptable list.

In short, "loving" an ink leaves you vulnerable to not considering other options which may be cheaper, better, or more easily available.

Reminds me there is a stark difference between a right-brain thinker and a left-brain thinker. A right brain thinker looks at a color of ink and says to him or herself, "this reminds me of...." A left-brain thinker will say, this will be good for me to accomplish.... :lticaptd:

Maybe I'm just am-brain-dexterous, but I like my inks both ways. I keep a fine point filled with durable ink; either Sailor nano, Noodler's Bulletproof, or a nice IG; and some nice juicy stubs filled with fanciful trollops of chromatic anarchy. So far I've had no complaints, though not much notice either. Gel-pens seem to have acclimated people to outrageous colors.

I am also a total ink floozy. I don't think I've used more than 15mL from any bottle, except maybe my Sei-Boku.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
