Montblanc Ballpoints

Hi All,

I have an opportunity to pick up some Montblanc ballpoint pens at 30% off MSRP. I heard that the Tribute to Montblanc LeGrande is going to be discontinued, would it be good value to pick one up? An alternative is the Meisterstuck Diamond. Which will hold value in the longer term?

None. Sorry, but these aren't rarities. Resale value for ball pens dicey. My 2 cents. FWIW

Basically, a ballpoint or rollerball writes as good as it's refill.

The vehicle to the refill will do something in ease of grip, balance and of course aesthetic value.

If you really like the looks of one pen, or find one definitely better in the hand, go for that.

Otherwise, take into account ease of getting refills.

Buy the Mont Blanc ballpoint if you want to use it. In fact, buy any pen as a writing instrument and not an investment. The MB Meisterstuck is a good ballpoint. Good refill.

+1 to what Welch said - buy the pen because you like the way it writes or looks - for me that was the Starwalker...

I don't think those pens "hold market value". I own a few and they are valuable to me because I enjoy them.

I have expressed my thoughts incorrectly. Montblanc would raise prices annually, so I guess 30% off is a good deal anyway. i was just wondering is it better to buy the Meisterstuck diamond (from which I can derive some satisfaction from the deal, seeing price go up year on year), or the Tribute LeGrande, which will apparently be discontinued.

I have played with the Tribute, and love the weight of the pen. I also wonder if the diamond is a bit too ostentatious....

thanks fo the discussion, although I fully intend to use the pens when I buy them, just looking for some insights from owners of either.

Now IF I would buy a Montblanc ballpoint and IF money would be no object, I would go for the John F Kennedy 1917 ballpoint.

Ask not where the budget for that pen comes from but how cool that pen would look in your hand! Like you said, if money was no object I would love to get that pen for my mum who is a JFK fan...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
