Parsons Essential Or Expert?

I disagree somewhat. The lower end Watermans are nothing special, but the Exception and Edson are outstanding pens and rank up there with the best. It depends on what you want.

I just said I wasn't a fan, not that they weren't any good. I just don't like the modern Waterman's. Having said that, I have quite a few of their vintage pens - W5, 515, 513, 503, etc etc. Now those really are outstanding.

The Expert is a business/office workhorse that is very reliable, easy to use, comes with good nib that is just a touch softer than concrete and the pen completely lacks any form of style and character. A good pen that does the job but not much more than that.

+1

The Expert was my first fountain pen purchase, bought before I knew any better. It's a good pen but it might not be what you're after.

My Parson's Essential is a phenomenal pen. It's got the broad stub nib and is smooth and wet and gives great line variation. What you also get, which is worth far more than monetary value, is Mr Pen's superb customer service. Any problems? Drop him an email and absolutely any issue will be resolved to your satisfaction.

Plus, you could easily use the pen as a billyclub in any violent situation.

Love my PE! I have three. I'd recommend the medium or broad cursive stub, and second, an italic, and third, an oblique.

Franklin-Christoph, Italix, and Pilot pens are the best!
Iroshizuku, Diamine, and Waterman inks are my favorites!

Apica, Rhodia, and Clairefontaine make great paper!

I just received my fifth Parsons Essential in the new burgundy color, which is very attractive, along with the matching ballpoint pen. I got the med Italic nib, knowing that the corners of the nib are a bit sharp for my writing style, so I give the pen a few rotating strokes on one of the ultra fine Arkansas stones which improves the smoothness. The ballpoint was very stiff but a drop of Duponts dry Teflon lube took care of that problem quickly.

For the price I do not think you will find a better pen, especially considering the range of nib choices, plus the Parsons Essential is one of the best looking pens out there.

Regards

Jeff

Yes, but it's well balanced and feels good in the hand.

I'm still agonising over the nib choice for the Parson's Essential. I've emailed Mr Ford and await any advice he can offer.

Super quick response! I've ordered the PE in amber with a broad italic oblique nib :D

Great delivery time - just 24 hours! I've needed to return the nib unit for exchange - the broad italic oblique is broader even than the double-broad oblique in the Montblanc. A medium italic oblique is enroute... I'll reserve any attempt at a review until it's arrival :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
