What Am I Missing?

I'll start right off by saying I don't do e-Bay, but I do watch it now and then just to see what things are going for. I saw this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MONTBLANC-MIDNIGHT-BLACK-INK-BOTTLE-60-ML-BRAND-NEW-IN-BOX-/171654302746?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27f764cc1a which is for a bottle of MB Midnight Blue (it's listed as black). So tell my why it's listed for MORE than normal retail by at least $7.00. Would anyone buy it???

It strikes me that there are at least a few thieves there.

Probably not the true FP diehards who know how to keep watch on currect market pricing. There was an ink I saw recently which was going for $100 a bottle, because it is no longer sold here in the States. I laughed, as I continued to do my pricing homework. Unfortunately, there just might be an extremely small segment of buying populace, who will break down and buy an overpriced ink. Like yourself, I am beginning to wonder why this overpricing issue is being seen on Ebay. In the past week I was pricing an Iro ink that was going for $29 on Ebay, which was selling for $16.69 on Amazon. Big price difference.

A few $ more for ink is easier for me to understand than seeing a Krone pen on Ebay today for $400 that Fountain Pen Hospital currently has on their site for $189.00 ( MSRP is $450) I can see not "shopping around" for a bottle of ink when it is a smaller purchase. BUT surely people check about before buying a $400 pen? And it isn't as though FPH is a "secret" it is practically the only pen store remaining in the largest city in the US!

I suppose that there are those who believe if they get something on e-Bay that they are getting some kind of great deal. There's one born every minute.

Many people think in terms of "price = cost + a fair profit". Sometimes, the question, to be posed,

is "How badly do you want this one ?"

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
