Charity Shop 45 'find'

Had a quick look around the local charity shop for anything useful or even any pens, you never know what might be taken in from someone's clear out.

I spotted a Parker cap amongst the pot of ballpoints, and quickly bought a very lightly used '45'.

There was some ink in it, but nib tine gap was zero, so can't have been used much.

It's got the better squeeze converter, and the nib is steel 'F'.

Markings on cap are; Parker, 45, no date code.

Not NOS but close to it. A few photos...

My first foray into vintage and semi-vintage pens was a 45. Like yours, it was in a box of mostly junker pens. I didn't even know what it was, other than it said "Parker" on it. And for $10 US it was definitely worth picking up.

Now I've decided to be in the hunt for more. Got bids in on a couple on Ebay at the moment. Recently picked up a NOS squeeze converter from isellpens (since I was putting in an ink order anyway ) so I am able to expand the search list a bit -- one less item of criteria as a requirement; I want:

1) not black -- I'm not a C-worder, just want to be able to tell my pens apart! (having trouble with a

couple of Vectors on that issue...)

2) not an M nib -- I want variety (because isn't that the point?)

3) preferably a 14K nib -- that's because the nib on mine is SOOO nice  ; wet and smooth and with a touch of give (not really flex, and not even springy like on the nib on my Pelikan M400 -- but definitely not a nail)

and up till recently I wanted one of the original squeeze converters: so many on Ebay come with just cartridges (or nothing at all -- I had to explain to one seller that there was a difference and that I needed pix of the inside of the pen....)

They are out there. It is so much more enjoyable finding pens in the wild than shopping on e-Bay. Very much like the difference between going on a real hunt (maybe with a long bow) and going on a canned hunt for some exotic game on a Texas game ranch.

That's one of my favorite things about the hobby. I love finding a pen at an antique shop or flea market and bringing it back to life. There is a satisfying feeling in fixing something and putting it back to a useful purpose.

Congrats on your 45!

O lucky chap. That's a nice little pen.

And those flighters, you know, they're very nearly indestructible. (For some reason whenever I see a 45 flighter I imagine a strange machine at Parker headquarters like that chair-punishing machine they have in Ikea that rocks the back of the chair backwards and forwards millions of times just to show you how much punishment the furniture can take!)

Too many pens, too little time!

I think I paid $35 on the bay a couple years ago for this Flighter.

I DO remember wincing at $35 for a 45 but it Did have a 14k nib And a factory converter.

I still think it was a decent enough deal.

Especially being near NOS if not NOS. (Plus I think the monotone models are harder to find.)

Very nice Flighter!!

i have one with gold trim, that I picked up on a relative steal on ebay about a year ago. No shrinkage on the section, 14k medium. Seller represented as a steel nib that was gold plated. I thought the color didn't look right for a plated nib and ended up getting it for a sumgai like $15.50 + shipping. (I did pick up a converter later - a PIF from a friend who had an extra)

But that CT Flighter of yours is very nice. Don't find them in the wild like that very often. Especially in that kind of shape. Enjoy.

A few more photos of this '45' CT, this one really hadn't been used very much as I found out when testing it, no gap whatever in the nib tines, now sorted out and writes as expected.

Wrote a line for comparison between the fine nib and the medium, the paper is Rhodia 80g/m2.

I think I was fortunate to find this one, it matches well with a 45 CT ballpoint and a 45 GT FP.

Nice find! I enjoy using my 45's every day (black GT and an olive green GT); I think they are great pens. I would love to have a Flighter if I could find one for not too much money. Need to start checking out the thrift shops in my area more often.

Don't sweat the small stuff....and it's all small stuff.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
