Sandalwood Pen

Recommended Posts

This commission was to make a sandalwood pen with the shape and dimensions of the Pelikan M1000. The Pelikans have many bands. Although, with sandalwood, I didn't think the metal band would go well. So I replaced the bands with sandalwood.

Here is my rendition of the M1000 in Sandalwood. My pen is slightly bigger than the M1000. Capped, it is 165mm. Uncapped, it is 155mm. Also, I am using 14mm threads on the barrel. Nib is Schmidt #6 gold plated. The ebonite core runs all the way through the barrel and the end cap screws onto it. Cap also has ebonite inside and the jewel on the cap screws onto the core.

Very handsome pen, and it looks to me that the Sandalwood comes into its own visually, as well. The dark bands and endpieces contrast beautifully with the light wood. And it looks like a comfortable pen to hold!

Keep up the good work...

I quite like the contrast of the sandalwood and the black bands, are the black bands and the cap made of ebonite or are they painted-polished wood?

Want :-)

I love the Pelikan-style bevel on the cap top, particularly the contrast between the sandalwood and black elements. Just wondering whether it wouldn't seem more 'finished' with a black band at the end of the straight part of the barrel, before the bevelled part?

Gorgeous, anyway.

Too many pens, too little time!

All the black bands are ebonite and the rest is sandalwood.

Thank you.

I had thought about that, but then the sandalwood on the end piece would be exposed, so I decided on putting the ebonite band on the end piece itself.

Thank you.

Manoj, a quick question, I like the feel of using an unpolished sandalwood pen (I seem to have ruined one stains grin a misbehaving ball point refill), have you seen or worked on versions that have solved this problem with fountain pens?

With sandalwood, this is a challenge. The moment you coat it, its fragrance will be lost.

I wonder if beeswax will work? Since it impregnates rather than simply coats the pen ... and also smells rather nice itself.

Beeswax on the outside?

A very elegant pen, indeed.

But, is it the light or is this sandalwood is much lighter than Hari's one?

Thank you. This one may be a shade lighter. They do darken over time.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
