Help With Waterman's Thorobred

Oslowe

Recommended Posts

Can I trouble anyone for any additional information on this Waterman pen. It is marked "Thorobred" on the barrel end. It is 4 3/16"(108mm) in length and 5 1/2" (136mm) posted. It is 3/8" at barrel threads (.410" or 10.4 mm.) It is .43" (10.92 mm) at the thickest part of the barrel. Imprint reads:

Waterman's

REG. U.S. (IDEAL in circle) PAT. OFF.

MADE IN THE

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Was this a ladies pen from their budget line?

Is this is Gray Pearl - Grey Pearl - Steel Quartz, etc.?

Sorry for the large image sizes. Thanks in advance for any help.

And here is a macro close-up of the nib for fun.

Looks like a 3 (3Vs were short/petite). Is there a number stamped onto the barrel end? That should give you the model number. The "V"s were for vest pockets. According to this, it could be a 301V. Thanks for the great links. Gets me closer to tieing it down! Barrel end has only the rolled imprint "Thorobred." No number or other markings.

I had been labouring under a misapprehension that the Thorobred didn't have a ladies' line. You moved me to look at my resources and there I find a much blurrier artist's impression of your pen in a retailer's catalogue. They describe available colours as "Grey, Garnet and Jet" and that's probably what Waterman gave them, and the cost was the same $3.00 as the longer men's version. The clip mounting is radically different between the genders, too, which I find very odd.

edit-- I suspect, without documentation, that "Thorobred" is just a rebranding (in a very literal sense) of the No. 3. We must defer to the stamp on the tail to tell 'em apart.

I have a Waterman Thorobred made from the same materials, but mine is 5 inches long (capped), has a different (side-mounted) clip, and no cap jewel. I heard someone mention that the red lines in the silver-gray plastic represent "blood lines", therefore the name "Thorobred". I doubt if that's the case, but it's a nice looking and well-performing pen. Mine has a "Ball Point" nib that's smooth and somewhat flexible.

Hi Oslowe

I bought a Thorobred also not long before Christmas, I found a bit of info here when I was looking prior to buying mine:

Yours seems to be the same pattern as the one I have, It is a little longer than the Waterman Commando I have (515) and fits my hand better. The clip appears a little different though.

Here's the catalogue image I was mentioning. I failed to mention that it comes from 1939.

Observe how the clips differ, and yet each matches an example seen above. I've commented in the past about Waterman's apparent urge to drive collectors of the future mad; this looks like another effort in that direction.

Wow! Thank you to everyone who helped ID this pen. Very, very grateful to Mr. Ernst Bitterman!

So, only 5 pens to go! Is this how "completers" are spawned?

Thanks again - Oslowe

I bought this one off the classifieds here in early December. It still isn't here yet and I am getting nervous that it won't ever arrive. I think it is one of the most lovely looking pens I have ever seen. I can not wait to get it in my hands. Looks like it has some flex too.

JUST LOOK AT THAT!

I pray it gets here. The longest I have had to wait for a pen to ship to here. If it arrives in good shape I will never let it out of my sight.

That is one nice looking pen! It looks good enough to eat :puddle: . So the Garnet has the green veining I guess. Very Christmas'ey looking pen. Happy New Year.

Thoroughbreds are lovely. You rarely see them in this color though and I like this one best of all. It is indeed Christmas-esque and I was hoping it would be here by then. Hopefully soon.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
