Rosetta Swab - 40 Blues In One Pic

Here's just one more example of my obsessive nature: a picture of all the blue and turquoise ink swatches in my collection.

While Goulet's Swab Shop is incredibly useful in comparing inks between each other, it didn't help me compare new inks to inks I already had. I wanted a picture of a group of swabs under (fairly) uniform lighting, so that I could color match that picture on my monitor to the swabs I already had and see at least some of the differences. So, for others who are where I was at the very beginning of this hobby (though I’m still nowhere near as experienced as a lot of you folks), here’s that picture.

First pic is color corrected so that the lighter inks are more accurate (on my monitor); second pic is straight off the camera, white balanced to the flash of my Canon.

For example, let's say you already have Iroshizuku Kon-peki, but you've had your eye on Sailor's Yama-dori. Well, pull out your swab and Gimp or Photoshop one of these pictures until your screen matches up. You should have some fairly (your-monitor-may-vary) accurate idea of the color difference between the two inks.

The Rosetta Swab; if you have one of the inks, you can compare them all.

Or, at least, that’s how I hope it works. I'm no graphic designer; I know next to nothing about whether or not this will be effective for anyone else.

WOW WOW WOW

That's wonderful! Did you post those reviews? You must! They are wonderful. I love how you displayed them.

Thank you.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Haha, thank you, Amber. I don't know if my "reviews" are worth posting here; they're more like glorified swabs than anything else. They all look like this: http://i.imgur.com/K39IM2Y.jpg

That binder in the picture has about 100 pages all like that. But compared to visvamitra, i'm just a poseur.

Compared to Vis, we are all posers. :)

We would love to see your reviews.

You can post them one at a time or scan them all for comparisons.

I just made myself dizzy scrolling up and down to match all your swabs with their names. Lol. Good job, there are definitely some inks I need to check out after seeing that. Like 29. Sailor Bungbox Fuji blue and Iroshizuku syo-ro. Cheers!

The praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards.

Aww, thanks folks! Alright, I'll try to borrow a scanner this weekend and get a post together. I appreciate the encouragement! Again, I don't know that they'll be as useful as Vis' supremely in-depth posts, but I guess the more points of data, the better.

I know this is shocking, but sometimes, we have different opinions on inks, so your input too (as long as it agrees with me - ha ha) is ALWAYS welcome!! Personally, I love Vis' work and encourage Vis to do more. (Vis' employer may have a different opinion on the usefulness of this forum, but I think this is hugely helpful.). So, we'd love to see your stuff too!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
