Journal Writing Mats

So I've been checking frequently for the hard writing mats at Nanamipaper.com for my tomoe river journal. So far no luck at catching it on stock. I was wondering if anyone knows of a writing mat I could use, preferably an a5 soft one. Writing on the journal is nor uncomfortable, but I just hate to have that ghosting of what I was writing on the page before it.

Nanami only stocks B5 blotter paper now so the same may go for the writing mats. Their thinking is that B5 can be slid around to suit other paper sizes, but it does not fit the Seven Seas Tomoe River journals which are A5. Phooey. I'm looking elsewhere, too.

Maybe Jet Pens' boards will suit?

Put it on my wishlist a couple of days ago. The soft one at Nanami sounded just right for my broad nibs, but not in the B5 size. So I will keep looking.

Thanks guys :v I think I might order one from jetpens. I'm a guy so I'm not too fond with the design but at least they got the size right. Any experience you have from them? I've only worked with Amazon and goulet pens.

You can contact FLAX art supply in San Francisco, and order blotter paper.

This is a rather large piece of paper (think desk blotter pad), so you could ask for them to cut it down to size so that it will fit into a shipping envelope.

FLAX is not set up for internet sales, so you have to call in your order.

They also have clear plastic mats, similar to desk mats/pads.

I use this when I write my pen pal letters on the kitchen table. It gives me a smooth writing surface.

That's odd. You could send Jet Pens an email on Monday and ask them what happened.

well I already spent the money on both of the b5 mats on Nanami so if for any reason I don't like it, I'll try again with jetpens.

Jet Pens is awesome. They're an easy company to deal with.

Their delivery charge to Australia is ridiculous. Would love to buy from them but not at the shipping rates they charge.

Both A5 hard and soft currently showing as available at Nanami. Personally love the soft one. Soft A4 also cuts with no bother into 2 x A5 size if need be.

Goat writes: @ac12 - Is it as simple as using blotter paper as the underlayment for thin papers (ex: Tomoe River)??

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
