Safe Black Ink For A Pelikan M200 Cognac Demonstrator

Hi all,

I am considering buying a Pelikan M200 Cognac demonstrator that I would like to use with black ink.

I have been using Diamine Onyx in other pens. I like this ink so much, but it seems that it could cause staining in a demonstrator (can someone confirm this point?), so I am looking for alternatives.

I have read in these forums that Aurora black and J. Herbin Perle Noir seem to be safe... I wonder if there is any difference in 'safeness' between both.

I found an old post very helpful at this respect, but if any you have any of you have experience with black ink in the Pelikan Cognac I would be very grateful.

I cannot comment about Diamine's ink and any potential for staining. I can vouch that I have had no staining issues with black inks from Aurora, Waterman, or Pelikan. I would deem all 3 of those manufacturers safe for the cognac demonstrator. One good way to help prevent staining is just regular maintenance. I don't like to leave pens inked and unused for prolonged periods as I think this promotes staining, most visibly so in a demonstrator.

Go with manufacturers' inks, like Pelikan, Parker and Waterman. They are relatively easier to maintain (ie not prone to staining)

I would stick with Pelikan, either their regular black ink or their Edelstein Onyx. These should not cause you any problems, and will be well matched to your pen in terms of flow.

Pelikan 4001 and Aurora are probably my two suggestions. Sheaffer Skrip (new) is another good black with surprising water-resistance too.

You are NOT limited to Pelikan inks. My beloved demonstrators get every ink I get my hands on and even if you get a stain, you can get it out. Also, blacks in my experience are the least likely to stain. Use whatever inks you can find and enjoy them all.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Diamine Onyx and Quartz stick to the sides of the body but will be washable (may look not nice). Noodler's black will be great for a demonstrator as it does not stick to sides and rolls off like mercury!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
